Titanium Peugeot ?

Posted on
  • saw this lovely, what looks like a lovely peugeot,
    with titanium tubes bonded to aluminum lugs... absolutely lovely.
    It is geared but... as a frame it's just very nice IMO.
    does anyone know about this type of Peugeot ? never know they did such a sassy frame

  • hello, i'm a newbie and cannot create a new post so I have to reply to 5 posts etc etc.
    As the thing i want to ask is related to my peugeot I'm posting here and I hope this is not a problem.
    my bike is similar to this one in the picture but is not in titanium :-) I'm going to convert it in single speed.
    what I'm trying to figure it out is:
    My chainset doesn't have bolts to hold the chainrings to the spider.
    Is it possible to remove the smaller (or bigger) ring and use bolts?
    Has anyone gone through the same situation?

    I'm just starting this singlespeed conversion and I'm a complete newbie but I've been studying S. Brown websites for MONTHS ! :-)

    thanks for your time to everyone .
    edy

  • the bigger ring IS the spider so you should theoretically be able to drill out the rivets holding the smaller ring in place and just use the outer ring/spider.

  • thanks Scott.
    that makes sense.
    I'm planning to fit this 18 teeth freewheel (I paid it about 2 pounds for it but probably a 20 tooth would work better but for now I'm on the cheap side....).
    pitch 12.7 mm - width 3.0 mm - teeth 18
    Using the 52 teeth ring, will the chain line need adjustment you think?
    the other weird thing about this freewheel is that the 2 dents to unscrew it are very small.
    the guy at the shop told me to unscrew it simply using a flat screwdriver and a hammer. but i still think that the screwdriver head will slip from the little...but I've been looking for a tool, but none seems to fit...
    the other thing is that it says to unscrew--> with a clockwise direction, and I'm not sure about this (but I've never unscrewed one before so maybe it's correct...)
    Anyway, do you suggest to use the current 52 teeth ring and make it work with the 18 teeth freewheel or buy a new chainset and slowly upgrade to a new rear hub/wheel (maybe a flip flop).
    I know this option is more expensive but I'm not sure if the frame is worth it.
    I didn't pay much for it but it feels a bit heavy to me (but I'm not sure how light a frame should be to be honest).
    thanks again

  • Dylan: Dazzler has one of those frames I believe. You might be more likely to find him on movingtarget

  • Did you took the photo off Condor Cycles? I saw that bike inside Condor, was impressed, until I saw the make of the bike I become more impressed.

  • Ah ha ha ha ha Edy, I have one of those too, Tour 10, weights a ton and is pure Carbolite sex. Nothing like the titanium beast above. Like most Pugs of their era (Early 80's) they are use dirty French threaded bottom brackets so any replacement is going to be hard. I'm running a threadless bottom bracket and Sugino cranks which seems to be working out fine. You will struggle to get a decent chainline using the old big ring and with an 18t rear you will be struggling with the gear inches but good luck.

  • hello JDB, thanks for your reply,
    I'd love to see yours and maybe get some precious informations on parts from you!
    can you give me an advice?
    Do you think is worth to buy a new crank, threadless bottom bracket, chain, and eventually a rear wheel ( i'd love a flip-flop to "try" the fixed) ? ? ?
    this will sum up to about:
    Sugino RD 165 Fixed Wheel Chainset = £60
    threadless bb = £20 (u can tell me this one)
    chain = £10
    total= £90

    • rearwheel with flip flop hub = £70 (starting price)
      Total= 160 + labour (that i might be able to do....maybe with a little help... :-) )

    Considering I bought the bike for £70
    total after work will be 230 to 260 for a nice single speed/fixie (with a crap old front wheel etc and few more parts to replace...)

    I mean a fuji track bike starts at £280 + £50 for a brake = £330
    http://biddlebikes.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=162
    and charge or Kona Paddy wagon etc are priced a bit more around 350 etc.
    or bianchi corsa £400
    I know they don't look sexy and I really would like a nice bike (i love the bianchi but i really need a freewheel so i will have to replace the wheel etc etc)

    What do you suggest ? what pro/cons there are in buying a new bike or converting the exhisting one? do yiou personally suggest the conversion on the cheap?

    thanks for your time and any suggestion welcome!

  • Mine ended up costing about £200, I'm still running the stock front wheel, brake, tires, bar and saddle that it came with, although I do need some new bar tape. I really like this bike, it does everything I think a fixed beater bike should do. Being an old french touring frame they have a long wheel base, relaxed angles and a suprisingly high bottom bracket which in my book makes a good bike for bouncing around lonon streets on. My build is nothing flashy which suits me fine since it spends its nights chained up outside my house, while the nice bikes hide inside. I say single speed it up ride the crap out of it and don't worry about being a hipster.

  • cool,
    did you do the job yourself? assembling the parts etc ?
    200 is my budget even if spending already 70 on the bike (which runs smooth as it is) has droped it to 130.
    Thing is that going over 200/250 is not worth as you can just buy a new one.
    Same here about the bling bling bike, I'd like it to look cool but i don't want to live in the terror of having it stolen that;s why i'm on the cheap side...

    if you can give me some tips i would be greatful !!! (and a picture etc)

    thanks !!
