  • Different types of locks - one Abus cable and one mini-d. They require different things to break open and 'look' more difficult to a thief. Also more versatile when you're not sure where you'll need to be locking up. Better to just keep an eye on your bike.

  • who/which shop has the mini d-lock for sale in london for the best price?

  • buy it online, so much more expensive in the shops!

  • I hardly see the Master Lock Street Cuff mentioned.

Is this model or the more heavy duty version any good?

  • I think Parker is the online shop with the cheapest Mini Evo, look for it, when you found it print the page, with the print go tho Cycle Surgery and show it to them, and ask them if the can mach the offer, I know one forum member that didi it and got the lock for the internet price in the day.

    Worth a try

  • if you have bike insurance you need to make sure that the lock(s) you buy is of the right solid secure level (bronze, silver, gold) otherwise your policy may not pay out if its pinched, which is basically an incentive to spend money on a better lock rather than cheap asian versions which are cheap for a reason...

Because they have the barrel type lock which is very easily picked plus the lings in the middle are also known to be easy to defeat by twisting.

  • how long will it be before Tynan's deterrent is mentioned here I wonder?

Ive heard of them locks coming apart with twisting too, plus they just look so weak!

I know someone who uses one on their bike, I think I might have a go at stealing it to teach them a lesson!

23 Minutes after your post...HUMAN SHIT ON THE SADDLE.

  • what happens if you twist the shit?

    this happen;

  • Abus "waist lock" here .. never had a problem

  • what about these kind of locks, are they any good at all?

right. i'm going to change my opinion on these locks. i have (had) an old abus steel-o-flex lock that i used to use one for my beater. on new year's eve, i lost my keys (along with, i think, my dignity. luckily i can't remember either). one of my bikes was locked up in my stairwell with this lock.

i've just used an angle grinder to cut my bike free. the lock is a steel cable housed in a hardened steel interlocking casing. it took one full charge of the angle grinder, and about 10 minutes of cutting. i'm fairly impressed by that.

i probaby wouldn't lock up my lo-pro outdoors with it, but it would be fine for the average bike. if you've got a fancy bike, i'd still recommend two locks (i carry a faggetaboutit d-lock and an abus chain lock) but i'm pleasantly surprised by how resilient this lock was.

  • I carry a heavy cable lock (not an Abus) and a decent D lock. Neither lock is massively expensive or anything but between them I think they'd give the average tea-leaf a few mins of trouble.

    This is true.

the Evo Mini however required a bit more than a simple cutter to break it.

    A car jack I believe.

this is the lock that i have, however i very rarely lock my bike up in central london or high teeleefing zones.
i think its physical presence is a deterent to your average spun out druggie and the sight of what looks like large hand cuffs probably doesnt do anything for their ever decreasing buzz.
anyway when i had a garage broken into the policeman who came to do whatever it was he did said something that made so much sense. words to the effect of 'the thief unless they know whats inside is going to go for the easiest garage they can break into'.
now relate that to locks and accept that all locks can be broken the only deterent is the lock that looks imposing enough to have them believe its going to take a while to buss. part of the thiefs plan is not getting caught and they longer they have to wrestle with your lock the greater the chance they have of getting caught.

these are just my thoughts, any reliance upon any of the above shall be at your sole risk.

  • professional bike thieves don't give a fuck.

average joe bike thief will have trouble with that lock, i suppose.

  • alternative but i bet there will be civil liberty issues and you'd get sued for damaging their clothing.

  • those locks are like 10 years old now...

  • I wonder who worked that out

  • what about these kind of locks, are they any good at all?

One of these combined with a mini-d up front would be my choice.
