• fraudax. Is that for Audax style but with out the 400 km ride over one day, so we'll just go out for a few hours and find a pub on top of a hill and drink bitter. The ultimate accessory will be someone with a hub dynamo. Someone on here must have one.

    Fraudax! Hah. Frau. Fraud. Audax.

Hardly call a hub dynamo an accessory. The ultimate accessory would need to involve catgut I would imagine.

Exactly. It's audax with none of the pain, suffering or effort that's involved in the real thing. It's fakengering for people with an aversion to neon bike components.

A hub dynamo would get a lot of respect (although a pre-war Carradice comes pretty close). The most fraudax points would be reserved for someone with a £400 huib dynamo but who doesn't ride in the dark.

Homemade saddle bag supports (extra points for wood!), mudguard accessories or map holders are also worthy of veneration.

  • dynohub + light with no bulb FTW

  • so when we having our first ride? St Swithin's day?

Sadly I don't qualify on the fraud front as I actually do Audaxes. This setup has done an SR series this year along with lots of other Audaxes.

  • [EDIT] Oh yes, I forgot to mention the Rixen & Kaul Minimap routesheet/map holder on the aerobars. :)

  • it was used to varnish wood furniture back in the old days, also it was used in oil painting and for gold leave varnishing. it is pretty hard to get a even surface, yu need to polish it on with a leather piece, stick a wool chunk in the leather so the liqid will stay longer in the leather. shellac drys out to a hard surface, it isnt alcohol resistand. i ´d prefer a linseed oil for wooden floors or a wax for your bar tape.

    hope that helps

  • Currently thinking of doing the cloth tape and shellac thing on my Mercian. Does anyone here use it? Is riding with unpadded bar tape a silly idea? Oh, and is there anywhere online where you can get a small ready mixed tin of shellac?

    Ta very much.

  • I used it on my moulton. It's pretty tough, looks good and mildly amusing to apply. The bars aren't padded, and i've done 500+ miles so far without any complaints.

Best way to do it is to buy shellac flakes and then mix them with meths. Need to wait 24 hours for it to properly dissolve, then paint it on - three or four coats should do the trick.

You can find the flakes on eBay.

  • What a faff!

  • Might be a faff, but it should be rewarding. This is the sort of look I'm going for....
