nexus are, by what i've read 2nd rate to the Rohlof internal gear hubs.
There is also a hub that's got infinite gear change [below]... same kind of thing but very different in the way it works, very nice indeed. see em here----->http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/hubs-internal.html

I'm sure I saw on the web somewhere a hack for turning a Nexus hub (possibly 7 speed?) into a three speed fixed.... have been looking for it recently as would be perfect for a project I got brewing.... but beginning to wonder if I dreamed the whole thing.....even sheldon doesn't help with this one....
Anyone able to help with a link?

I know a Strumney Archer can be done this way.

I had a Nexus on a Dahon Mu XL folder - great, relatively inexpensive, not too weighty but not a huge amount of range - fine for bombing about London but I got rid when I started doing more miles on my commute. Rohloff's are in a different league in terms of engineering, gearing range and price though many argue that the Shimano shifters are actually better.

Shimano have bought out a better hub gear system called 'Alfine' still not Rohloff standard but a bit tougher than the Nexus. It can be found on the Charge duster eight

EDIT (The system is'nt exactly new its just a new use)
i know its not fixed, but i am very curious about these.
does anyone have any experience of using one?
where can i get one/have a go?
