Awareness Raising Spoke Cards Campaign Project?

  • I don't want to get all corporate on yo asses but should we have a meet up and actually sit down and scope agenda points etc?

  • Its like herding cats in here!

    :-)

  • How about 'WHEN PASSING A LORRY...'

  • I think the spoke card thing came from getting a direct message to more cyclists by sticking something in their spokes that will not blow away or fall off before they return to their locked bike.
Plus we can all stick one in our wheels, I always catch people at the lights reading my cards.
This can just be one thread of the campaign.
All good so far IMO, but agree that more needs to be done.
    D!

  • I don't think anyone here is naive enough to think that spoke cards / flyers are the solution to a very big problem. However, i think they would be a starting point and a great way to build 'buzz' (sorry, media person :( ).

They would also be a great way for people, who don't have much time to dedicate, to get involved with a worthy cause.

    They can't do any harm!

  • Sorry I don't mean to piss on anyone's parade. I will be happy to help out in this. But as Donut said, more than this is needed - to create the buzz to which you refer. Robofoxx offered to get in touch with the nationals on this!

  • How about 'WHEN PASSING A LORRY...'

I think this will give rise to jokes about constipation.

  • which is no bad thing ...

  • All in all I am proud to be an active member of this forum because of threads like this, where we all contribute to hopefully make a difference. Whatever we do, we have the skills, numbers, comitment, energy, passion and resources!

It's awesome. Media attention is a must tho, showing active cyclists (daily commuters especially) doing something about the problem! :)

  • I think Bill's right. We need to get lobbying not laminating.

Its like herding cats in here!

If lobbying's your bag then I think there's a copy of the latest Vacher's Quarterly knocking about the office.

  • Is it too soon to start new threads for the lobbying / viral / website..
This could even be a social group / sub-forum? 'Activism'

  • You lost me wools. No lobbying is not something I've done. Is this^ some kind of refence to the parliament lobbyist shizzle, all that backsheesh and vested interests business? I meant lobby in the lay meaning, as in letter writing and protesting and whatnot.

  • This is a rough sketch.

For someone to keep the card in their office cubicle/ locker/spokes or whatever - it needs to be cool looking.

The message has to be factual but not dictatorial. The card should point to a place where the whole thing can be explained - ie: the website.

When I see cyclists getting right up alongside I truck I think the are going "Into the valley of death"

Maybe the text would be better saying "Don't undertake lorries on a bike" what you do instead is left open so as to avoid an future litigation.

Visual style would be influenced from the classic London transport posters:

  • This thread is awesome, and you guys and gals, are making me weep with admiration, but I agree with the herding cats thing, Might it be useful to get one person to be in charge of each part of this awareness campaign? one for the council building ring of bikes, one for the spoke cards, one for the media, one for the web site, so we can bring some of this into focus? or possibly starting a thread for each one?

    'king A!

  • Loving the valley of death poster! I want one!

  • I don't know if this has been said? It would be great if the final design is approved by either a survivor or a relative of someone who has been lost. This would give it a bit more weight if the media took hold of it.

  • Sorry I don't mean to piss on anyone's parade. I will be happy to help out in this. But as Donut said, more than this is needed - to create the buzz to which you refer. Robofoxx offered to get in touch with the nationals on this!

if you want to make an impact lets get a 10 foot squate pice of lino and cut that proposed spoke card into a fuck off stencil.

Then book a night ride and tag the road junctions where people have died as a result of collisions with lorries.

  • back to the ring of bikes idea, what if everyone taking part who knew someone who had been killed on the road, wore black, or some other signifier? in fact what if everyone wore black to put a bit of visual impact on any press photo's???

  • It seems we have a dilemma:

cyclists filtering left + lorries turning left without seeing cyclists -> people dying.

Stop either completely and people stop dying this way, but merely reducing either of them encourages the other. (If lorries mostly look and stop for cyclists, cyclists perceive this and left-filter more. If cyclists rarely filter, lorries will stop looking.)

Can we actually make things better, just with information?

Maybe if we mess with peoples perceptions: if cyclists think that lorries never look, and lorries expect left-filtering cyclists all the time, maybe things would be better. How do we create (and maintain) both perceptions at once?

I wonder if the relatives of Lisa Pontecorvo might able to approve it? She was a real campaigner it seems.

It occurred to me as well but I wondered if anyone else would be childish enough to pick up on it ;)

I do think though for this to get done we need a small group of people to coordinate things offline by sitting down together one evening after work and divvying up what needs to be done. I'm happy to volunteer my services.

  • me too, oh and pipwish I LOVE your design. great impact

IMO, most sensible suggestion so far. 'Look out for lorries, they may not be looking out for you'

  • The truck diagrams need to be simplified colour wise from the ones on MT as they rely on the description.
Just a quick knock up of the diagrams. Maybe the line is a little rhymey but it sort of works at a glance.
    Could be the reverse maybe.
