On the whole I think 'owning' pets is problematic. However i do have a cat of my own. it was a birthday present years ago:
Please excuse the excessively limp wrist. It has a really good life here at my parents house and is fed regularly and well. Whilst we do in a sense 'own' it, the reality is that it owns us... they're selfish animals and we have to look out for it a lot. In return it's nice to have around. Whilst I agree that owning another life is plain wrong when it's put like that in those words, I think that it is case specific. Just my thoughts on my particular cat (Tilly) and something that I've thought about a lot.
