that isn't a slightly large back wheel, that thing probably has a diameter of 1000mm, as opposed to the 622 of 700c and the 630 of 27" wheels.

There is a little thing in cycling which is the campag versus shimano war. You have advocates of both companies raging fierce battles about which is better. there is a rule that you should not mix components from the two companies on the same bike.
