  • Not quite finished with my fixed road bike build and I#m already planning a SS mtn bike build.I have a rough idea of what set up I would like, but I am having trouble deciding between the following two frames.

Dialled bikes Love/Hate: steel frame with Phil Wood EBB £245
    http://www.dialledbikes.com/products/mtb/lovehate.html

On one Inbred: Steel frame with sloted track ends/ disc brake mounts £145
    http://www.on-one-shop.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Slot_Dropout_Inbred_27.html

I suppose the main question is which system do people prefer for chain tensioning. It looks like the best would be an EBB as you wouldnt need to adjust the disc brakes each time time you adjust the chain, but I dont really know much about either. Any veiws on this or these frames much appreciated.

  • Can you find a Kona Unit, Voodoo something (can't remember the name) or Orange P7 for a sensible price? They all have Paragon-esque drop outs which make setting up discs a lot easier.

  • i hate the rear forks of on ones ugly as sin.

  • the phil BB on the love/hate is a piece of piss to use being 2 bolts to undo and tighten. i have never seen a sliding dropout arrangement that hasn't involved undoing more than 2 bolts, slippage, or been a faff when dealing with a puncture. saying that the paragon dropouts would be my choice if i didn't have a phil EBB.

but i don't think mike at dialled has any L/H left? or if he has only in large.

  • Just realised that I have posted this in the wrong section, meant to post under bikes n bits. Sorry!

Is there really a shortage of Love/Hates? Bugger that was top of me list.

Could go OTP with a Jamis Exile, but the brakes and suspension seem too good to discard yet too poor to keep (based on reviews).

  • i don't think there were any mediums but if you mail mike at dialled he will put you straight on this.
if you really want one then put a wanted ad on singletrack, they sometimes come up on there secondhand.

  • Dialled every time.

  • I've owned both. Dialled would be my only choice if I was after another SS. Much nicer finish and feel and just a sense of higher quality.
    Both actually ride okay though.

  • I don't think Dialled Mike has any Love Hates left, I've emailed him this thread. I have 3 Dialled's and love each and every one.

  • I've owned a horizontal dropout, an EBB and an ENO hub, and the EBB is bar far the most elegant, as well as th easiest to live with solution IMHO. I'd therefore recommend the Love/Hate if it's design yo're after. That's before one considers the nice finish of the L/H over the tissue paper thif of the (admittedly cheaper) on-one

  • the only time you'd choose an on-one over a Dialled is when you want 700c or 29'er wheels.

    because Mike does neither.

  • Thanks all, for some really usefull info. Sounds like its Dialled all the way (if I can track one down). I'll definitely be looking for something with a EBB though. For what its worth I felt the pricing of the Love/Hate was very fair considering the quality (according to every review that i have read) and the fact that it came with a Phil Wood EBB ready installed (dont Phil Wood BBs require a special tool for installation?).

    Thanks again folks!

  • no special tools needed.

  • Phil wood EBBs just slide in cos it's simply an elegantly machined lump of aluminium that you install a BB into. Phil wood BBs (no E) need special tools to install.

  • Am I right in thinking the phil EBB is the bit that fills the oversized hole and carries any BB. The salient point being that the bike comes with the EBB but not a BB, you need to buy one of those seperate like. Because I'm getting the impression Smallfurry thinks he's getting a BB.

  • I was looking for clarification. You may get a phill BB too, but I wouldn't get my hopes too high.

  • im pretty sure you dont get BB just the EBB shell.

  • if mike has run out and you're looking for used one try posting in the classifieds on:
singletrackworld.com - lots of mtb single speeders on there.

might be worth giving head for the hills a bell to:

  • Any opinions on this OTP $785 from the US.
Seems good for the price (allowing for delivery customs etc...) and could be a cheaper way of getting off-road than a home build, as the frame looks to be upgrade worthy.

    • Reynolds 631 seamless, air-hardened chromoly main tubes, reinforced head tube collars, double butted cromo stays, RD convertible rear entry dropouts, slotted I.S. disc brake mount
    • Manitou Relic Super 100mm travel fork, TPC damping 30mm alloy stanchions, external preload and rebound adjust
    • WTB Speed Disc rims laced to single speed disc hubs
    • Maxxis Mobster 26 x 2.1" tires 60tpi
    • Shimano 16t freewheel
    • TruVativ FireX Singlespeed 33t crankset
    • Crankbrothers Eggbeater MXR clipless pedals
    • Hayes Sole hydraulic disc brakes V6 rotors
    • Easton EA30 Low Rise Monkeybar
    • Easton EA30 10° stem
    • Easton EA30 micro-adjust seatpost
    • WTB Rocket V Comp saddle
    • Published Weight: 26.00 lbs
  • im pretty sure you dont get BB just the EBB shell.

you get the phil EBB with the frame.

you still have to use whatever ordinary BB you are going to have,to hold the cranks on.

see? your BB fits into the phil part which is eccentric.

sliding dropouts/track ends with disc brakes is a real PITA, that bike looks ok'ish. I'd say it was a bit long, deffo in the chainstay department.

  • Been on the Dialedbikes site a hundred times and never noticed the pic of the EBB sans BB. Fair play I'm a plank.

  • yeah but it means you can use whichever BB takes your fancy

    as per RPMs post

  • I kinda have my heart set on a 110.5mm Phil BB with a Paul comp MTN chainset and Paul comp SS disc brake hubs. Should put me in chainline heaven.

BTW all this bike info is great an all but when are we going to start a
'how to convince your wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend that the world would be a better place if you owned another new bike/bikepart'
    Thread, cause I'm f-ing struggling
