on track frame 170's are fine for the road...as track frames have higher bottom brackets
a conversion based on a road frame might lead to pedal strike difficulties.

beware of some cranksets saying they are 165 but they are in fact 170 but with the pedal hole machined further up the crank. can't think of an example but i am sure i have come across this beforeRPMs and cheap Suginos.

Is there a problem associated with this, j?
Can't see the crank grounding before the pedal or anything daft.
Ugly, though.

Hello all,
The bottom bracket on my bike is about 26cm's from the floor. Which I think is quite low? Anyway, I've got 170mm cranks on there, and am always wary of clipping the floor when cornering. So, I was thinking of getting some shorter cranks, to give myself a little more clearance. (only get less than 90mm at the mo, infact less still taking in to consideration pedal depth and 'toe pointing')
I was just wondering if anyone had recently made a crank change like this and noticed any particlur loss of leverage etc, making it hard work to cycle/ start off/ maintain speed etc... Or if anyone has any general crank related tips...
Cheers all.

Which pedals are you using?

mks track pedals

Have you clipped a pedal yet?
No?
Relax and earn some interest on that cash.. -

true say. I like yr style. But I do feel I'm holding back a bit because of it...

HTFU and push yourself until you get a pedal strike, then you'll know where the limits are
-
• #38
you meen you havent struk yet?
go faster ride brakeless
the theory :you can gain more speed by spining than leverage power. -

i just read the thread above about cranklength and it seems alot of people in that favour 170mm? i have always used 172.5 on my road bikes and 175s on bmx and since i built my fixed i havce been using 172.5's out of my spare parts pile which are a touch long but i have never had pedal strike. just about to purchase some new ones and am torn between 170s and 165s... u run about 70gear inches and am wondering how it will affect my riding? higher cadence? less strength on hills? do many people run the 167.5?
-

167.5 is rare. I use 175 on road where you can adjust on really fast corners, and 165 for fixed, helps with London curbs too.

Profile do a mini BMX crank that goes down to 140mm in increments of 5mm. Pedal strike those babies, I think not.

@joshscott187 - I swap between bikes with 165 and 172.5 cranks and there is barely any discernable difference to be honest.

Both fixed? Sticky-outy pedals, or neat little tucked away ones?

Two fixed (both with 165s) and two geared (both with 172.5s). I use SPDs on one of the fixed and Campag Pro Fit pedals on the other three.

looked through a few threads and couldnt find anything that indicates what crank length most fixie/trick riders were using.
as i have currently got a 165 but still get slight toe overlap when trying to barspin and sharp corners etc.. any suggestions on what size i could be using? thanks. -
• #46
164mm
-
• #47
most "fixie/tarck [sic]" riders use 165mm cranks.
-
• #48
have you read this thread?! doesn't it say EXACTLY what crank length fixie riders are using?
you'll get pedal strike on your front wheel using any crank length with bar spins. it's all about getting the position of your pedals right, or something. Not that i know anything.
I have 165 on 2 of my fixed bikes, 170 on the other, and 175mm my road bike. I prefer the shorter cranks.

I think theres been alot of red meat consumption by some people on here chill out...(it cant be good for your blood pressure) Yes i read that but i was wondering if any one was on 150s or less and seeing how it effected there gain with wheelieing etc.. bmx style cranks..
Thanks

most track cranks are 165 or 170
most bmx cranks are 170-180.
so no.
yeah, i like my 165s and yes they are cooler.
