Awareness Raising Spoke Cards Campaign Project?

  • Maybe a (and I hate this expression) 'P.C' friendly version "DONT F**K WITH TRUCKS"
All the swearing here is fine but not sure how much media attention we'll get if we run around Fing & Blinding! Or am I being a total wuss?

  • I don't know if spoke-cards are the answer. There are around 500 000 cyclists in London. Much better to use the media to get the message out.

I propose that we write a letter to the Mayor, and copy it to the media. It should get some results.

    I am thinking something like:

    left-turning lorries major hazard
cycle lanes extremely dangerous as they put cyclists in wrong place
    whole LCN needs to reconsidered
    more pressure exerted on operators

and possibly copies to Road Transport Minister

this will have two effects, if covered by the media,

    1. put pressure on authorities
    2. raise awareness of problem for more effectively, in terms of people it actually reaches.

  • No Pipwish! I think we all got it!

  • I have no artistic ability, or a laminating machine, but I will happy distribute around sw1, and put one on every bike I see.

  • I fully support he lbma's campaign to ban trucks from the congestion charge zone during congestion charge hours. I think this is a much more realistic way of preventing deaths on our roads than a public information drive. Maybe the cards should contain the diagrams of trucks blind spots and information about the campaign aswell as information about the campaign and a link to a letter people cant print and send detailing what the campaign wants for them to sign and sent to city hall.

Also does anyone know of a petition on the governments website for this? If not we should start one. http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/

  • No Pipwish! I think we all got it!

    OK

  • Bill, good points but can't we do both??

  • I am not against the spoke card idea, but it's piecemeal - the cops and tfl have been handing out this sort of stuff for the last 6 years, for no great effect, and their budget is vastly bigger than ours.

If you really want to do something, you should be writing letters, especially letters that represent a constituency. This will be more effective.

  • mock-up.. i like kowalskis idea

is that when you can't remember what it's called :)

  • if we could get a spoke card together with a plain and simple message,
that everyone can print themselves and distribute themselves,
    that would be great.
I would be in on that and so would many many others im sure.
Spoke cards is definitely a top notch idea , cos it's something we all can do so easily and together we can really make a difference to the people who use bikes.
It seems that nothing else is being done.... and this is as good as anything.

  • I just posted this in the other thread as this one was started my be more relevant here.

How about setting up a website with the MT images on and including the URL on the spoke cards. It could also be used to bring awareness to other cycling safety issues and have links No10 petitions or examples of letters that can be printed and sent to MPs which I believe will be far harder for them to ignore.

  • I think a 30 sec viral web based video. Tynan can do the music I'll do the graphics.

The TFL basketball viral got spread around quite well. The creative idea for that and the production techniques used are all within what we can do.

  • Bingo - my letter has gone to Boris, bit of flattery and a few statistics with the willingness to work it out should do the trick

  • that's pretty good

    mock-up.. i like kowalskis idea

  • Another point is that we are right back where I started on this 6 years ago. This is exactly the solution that the authorities proposed AND IT HASN'T WORKED

  • "better to be late in this life than early in the next"

    my motto

  • is that when you can't remember what it's called :)

    F'ing . . . Effing! I dunno, fucking swearing and stuff! ;)

  • Bill, do you think that a printable letter or a link to a printable letter could be something you could put on MT? Does something like this already exist?

  • ^^^ are there not a lot more cyclists now?

  • Some suggestions:

    Don't die of ignorance

    Give Wide-Loads a Wide Berth

    Never Undertake a Lorry

Always pass lorries on the right

If you value your life, pass lorries on the right

Undertake on the way to the undertakers ((sorry, tautology at an extreme!))

Don't push your luck with trucks

Don't push your luck with the truck

    Leave the left alone!

    Just some thoughts for you.

  • Some suggestions:

    Don't die of ignorance

    I remember that one!

  • I will write another letter with the points raised above, and make it downloadable, but it will be a lot more effective, and likely to carry a lot more weight with the media, if it is on behalf of the London Fixed-Gear and Single Speed Forum collectively, rather than a lot of seperate individuals.

Don't me ask me why, it just works that way. And the electronic petitions are a waste of time, BTW.

I also have massive concerns with pre-judging the causes of this latest collision, and doing a spoke-card based on that. TfL has already spent a lot of money on cycle-lanes that encourage novice cyclists to take dangerous lines. No matter how many spoke-cards you dish out, you will not be able to be overcome that message.
