BB's are easy, I never got taught how to fit them, just did it, tools are cheap, good on ya for wanting to learn, so much better when you can fix it all yourself.
As Murt said . . . where are ya, when does it need doing?
Roberto (on the forum) has an ebay store of just go and see him, always has miche BB's in stock.
Good price too. -

@bummpf, i was merely asking where he was because there are a lot of people all over town who would be willing to help.
if he is near me, i would gladly do it for a beer. -

@ 31t®um - I preferred the offer when you were willing to do it for beers! :)

it's a piece of piss to do yourself. just buy the tool, usually about £10, and i'm, way out west so miles away from you.

Roberto is prob 5 mins from you, hes right by Stockwell Tube - get in contact with him, get a new BB off him and get him to show you how its done - its really not hard to do, but having someone more experienced help you first time out is worth it if you are worried about your skills

Thanks guys for the links and suggestions. I've left roberto a message. I'm only worried about getting the bb wrong because the guy who built my bike obviously screwed it up and thats how I got into the situation.

Swapped a Miche BB for a Campagnolo Centaur today.
Same splined tool (plus big adjustable spanner) to remove old and add new with addition of some plumber's PTFE tape to lock the cups in solid as suggested by Tynan. Tighten cups towards the back wheel, loosen towards the front wheel on most frames.
However before replacing BB check yo god-damn chainring bolts because they will definitely make you think you have a BB problem when you don't.

i love those centaur BBs.
cheap and good.

I'll think about the centaur - my road bike has centaur everything, and I like it. (not that I've ever ridden a geared, freewheeling bike)
Chain ring is definitely screwed up tight. Thanks for the tips.

same as that, had one in mine for 15 months now and only cost £13 still spinning as good as new.

Mine was £30... or did i miss-hear you. -

I remember someone saying he'd got a few at Evans around the £15 - he reckoned they'd mispriced them.

OK, here's the update. I took everyone's advice, got the tools and did it myself. I'd be happy except for the chunks of powder coat taken off the rim (flying chain whip) and a stubborn BB lockring that means there's less paint on the frame then there used to be.
I'd never have thought that 1/17th less sprocket teeth would make so much extra work!
Here is the aftermath:
My BB is creaking (was never tightened properly when I got the bike) - needs replacing I think otherwise that bastard might cease up one day and kill me. Then there is the 18T sprocket, I want to change down to 17T - I need more skid patches.
I could probably demystify the sprocket easily enough, I've changed over a cassette on my roadbike before. But I've never done a BB and don't have the tools.
So I could take it into a shop but I'd rather learn how to do it myself. So what I'm looking for is someone who has the skills and the tools who can teach me how things are done. I'd want to make sure you haven't just built a hack polo bike once 5 years ago, you need to know what you are talking about.
I'd pay for it - not hundreds but something to make it worth it. I still need to get the parts (Miche everything) so this would need to be a week or two from now.
Any takers? Get your bids in.
