  • Rest it a day or so, buy a knee support and then try again. Until it's fairly chronic the doctor will only tell you to rest it and you'll have to wait a while before they x-ray/scan or whatever unless you go private

  • It sounds like patellar tendonitis, which is a transient thing if you take the right action.

    Get some RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation), don't leap on your bike and start doing stressful accelerations the minute you leave home/work.

    Cover up your knees - it's chilly now.

    Be very mindful of your 'form' on the bike - try to keep your knees tracking straight, stand up and use your bodyweight to ease away from standing starts, rather than thrashing it (sitting or standing). Use a brake to slow down, at least until the pain subsides.

    That's my guess/advice.

  • I'm still trying to find a publisher for my book 'The complete history of my knee troubles'. Admittedly the first 300 pages are a bit slow but it picks up after that.
    I've lost count of the number of specialists and physios I have been treated by. I remember one consultant telling me I had the thickest patella tendon he'd ever seen which from a man who has spent his life looking at knees seemed notable.
    I had what sounds like the same problem as you; I say sounds like because I don't want to give you false hope; knees, like spines, are complex. I went thru years of different diagnoses and treatments before a physio got it right; my knee cap doesn't move up and down as it should, it moves to the side. The solution was to apply tape to it to move it to the left and tilt it up a bit. I had to do this every time I rode (which was every day cos I'm a courier). This reduced the times my knee would 'go' from every few weeks to every few months. Though the condition was innate the problems only really started after I got hit by a motor bike so it was a combination of an existing problem exacerbated by a trauma.
    Other things which helped; using a low gear (39x17 in my case), keeping the knees warm and not getting hit by any more motor bikes.
    That was a few years back; now the problem seems to have gone away though I did have one episode recently after a spell off the bike.
    So it's good and bad news; you can find a correct diagnosis and treatment but it may take a while. Equally a bit of RICE, as suggested above, may do the trick. Good luck.

  • My knees are super-delicate, I thrashed them ten years ago on high gears 'til I literally couldn't walk, kept me off a bike for ages... Low gear and spin like a mofo is the only medicine IME...

  • My Dad seems to have much the same symptoms, the problems arose through the years in many car accidents(driving). Just wondering would any of you know any details on the surgery side of things?
    He has gone to GP's before through the years and it has gotten to the stage where surgery is the only real solution. I am using this as a query and as a sort of lesson to you all, his knee gets so bad at times that clutching in the car makes him nearly scream. So catching these problems early really is the trick.

    That stuff dyed my knees green for about a year when I was 11-12. It helped my osgood-schlatter disease though, a little bit.

To cut a long story short, she's gonna lose the leg now... Just cuz she couldn't be arsed to listen to her consultant and take a month off work ten years ago... Not 100% related, but a cautionary tale nonetheless...

  • RICE for a couple of days as suggested already. If the pain is still bad find a good physio for advice, if the pain diminishes but returns with cycling look into a cyclefit or similar.

    If your knee has been knocked around a bit then there may be a little bit of arthritis which can be aggravated by the cold so keep it warm when on the bike.

    Do you stretch after cycling? if not the muscles and tendons may be getting too tight.

    As others have noted knees can be complicated, so take all advice on the internet with a pinch of salt.

    You'll be seen by students, not always the same one for each appointment. Their supervisor will come in as well. £25 for a consultation that lasts an hour, and then £20 each session after that, and they'll normally last about 30mins.

    If it is your patella, then also cut a section of bandage and tie it around your knee, a la Juan Sebastian Veron of Manchester Utd and Chelsea.

    It helps the patella tendon track straighter.

    And yes, cover your knees! If it's now cold enough in the mornings for you to think about covering your arms, cover your knees.

  • Been to the doc and yes it's the Palenta thing. Anything from sergury to phycsio the doc says. I'm going private. The doc also says the knee is the worst part of the body to have treatment for by the NHS, i'll be waiting for ages for a junior to sneeze all over the insides of my knee.

    So until then sports fans i'm off the road.
