Tour Bus Ban in City (Not London)

  • How about this for a rapid response to a cyclists death.

Not sure if it will have any real impact but it is good to see some response to a cylists death. A cyclists death on London's roads doesn't even make the news these days.

  • I'm sorry, but that's the most stupid knee-jerk response I've ever heard of. Someone gets hit by a bus in a situation where the bus driver wasn't driving aggressively and it was a matter of them being unlucky enough to be there when the cyclist slipped on the tram line, and they ban buses from that street?

Disproportionate and inappropriate as far as I'm concerned.

  • I though all Australian cyclists were over here clogging up our roads and delaying our buses.

  • her wheel slipped on a train track, thought with a car perhaps she's more likely to survived, that what I think what they're trying to get at.

  • Drinking all our rubbish swill lager. Oh, carry on...

  • melbourne CBD is pretty small, they meant tram tracks, which a friggin lethal.

  • I agree its a bit of a pointless kneejerk reaction, but it is better than no reaction at all.
Tram tracks are lethal and only get worse when it rains.

  • Tram tracks are roughly the same size as a bicycle wheel. If an inexperienced cyclist ends up in the groove they can be stuck helpless and directly in the line of fire of a tram, whcih in turn has difficulty in stopping. A bit of panic and the result is ghastly. Tram and cycles don't mix well.

I ought to correct my earlier post. Experienced Australian cyclists are delaying our buses....

I think they are saying the buses can be parked somewhere more appropriate and therefore cyclists wouldn't get into situations where there wheels get stuck in the ruts of tram tracks.

I can definitely see that - and appreciate it. I think my strong response is more a result of my working in local government for so long - I'm all in favour of a rational, informed and well-reasoned response to any issue, however it seems in local government all it takes is for something like this to happen and suddenly there are these rash, ill-thought-out decisions that might seem like a good idea at the time, but don't take into account what the real problem is (i.e. tramlines and parked up buses - not the buses themselves) in any attempt to address the 'problem'.
