Foot placement

  • ive just been making some DIY powergrips, and i am very suprised by how much i like them.

however im not sure exactly where to have my feet placed on the pedals. i tend to ride just behind the ball of my foot, however im not sure if this is good cycling practise.

  • depends what you find comfortable. look at a pair of spd shoes and work from there.

  • Should be on or just in front of the ball of your foot. TBH, that's elementary...

  • balls

  • cojones

  • Yeah, but if you don't know it's elementary, what's the harm in asking?

    ridicule?

  • £10 on ridicule.

  • What next - LFGSS cycling lessons?

  • I always follow the 'best foot forward' method. Seems to work. I wonder what they'd recommend on BikeRadar though?

  • melon: I'm riding powergrips, and depending what shoes I'm wearing the sometimes are pretty tight, and sometimes a bit more loose. The tighter they are the more you use the front of your foot, and that feels more comfortable and powerful. Similar to riding your saddle to low for a while and then putting it up to correct height I find that the ride is smoother and seemingly faster ... or maybe that was wishful thinking ...

  • As a rule you want to be on the ball of your foot. Of course, like anything else, a good rider will be adjusting these things as they need to be adjusted. Riding in the wet, breaking hard, mono-hopping, etc will all call for slight adjustments in foot placement.

Primarily you need to find what is most effective and/or most comfortable and make the too merge harmoniously.

    Peace

    not with cleats!!

  • what is mono-hopping?

  • Depends on the riding too.

I use powergrips on my polo bike and have it so that when the strap is tight my foot is placed further forward than I'd usually ride.

When I'm riding that bike for any amount of distance etc I slide my foot back so I'm pushing with the ball of my foot but this obviously means the straps are looser. A little forward slide of the foot means that I can still skid.

  • Just lately i've found that the perfect position for my foot seems to be in my mouth!
