I think you took my tongue-in-cheek "anti-intellectual" remark a bit too seriously. There are obviously intellectuals in a wide variety of areas.
And it's too bad you didn't find university intellectually stimulating. Trust me when I say that it can be. I found it terrific (although more so in North America than the UK).

It's not that university isn't intellectually stimulating per se, it's just very limited in scope. The problems I face in my job - for example - are more offer a greater range of intellectual stimulation.
