i didn't even know goldtec made cogs

yes, thats the one - bought the lot (hubs and cog) from betd. Its on with the sticky out bit (flange?) on the inside. other way round would be worse. I suppose a different cog with larger flange would do the job - means more chainline fiddling. have emailed betd as well.

aidan same thing has happened on my goldtec hub...but my sprocket is not branded :(
have you done anything or just left it as it is? the chain doesn't actually touch the spokes but it does scare me.
will and EAI cog make any difference - does it have a bigger flangey thing - actually, i presume you recommend the EAI as you have one on a goldtec and it works. maybe i'll do that.

naa just left it...should be alright.i do plan to upgrade my sprocket at some point.

i had a generic cog on my goldtec it was close but not touching EAI cog sits further out and was quieter.
as long as there are no marks on the spokes from the chain it will be o.k. it's either touching or it isn't -

it was yes, just didn't think about it.
i'm a bit of a fucktard sometimes, they are smooth as when i put them in a fork so Nevermind! -

this is a bit of a hijack this thread time, but better here than a fresh thread and besides this thread made me think.....
i'm looking for a cog, and i was gonna go for a cheap and cheerful £5 jobbie from SJS cycles.... is that wise ?
Or Should i go for the far more expensive EAI cog ?
i can't see what difference there might be other than longer lasting
-
• #15
smoother running, due to better shaped teeth, better machining. quieter.
and ultimately, not that expensive either. -

All cogs are equal, but not identical...
Once I bought a cheap cog to try a higher ratio than the one I usually ride and, when it arrived, the threads of the cog were so badly done that I never dared to fit in the hub: it didn't screw smoothly more than one turn. The last thing you want is to ruin a relatively expensive hub (and wheel too) just to fit a crap cog. Apart from that, there are also important differences in terms of the quality of the steel, of the machining of the teeth, weight, etc...
A Shimano cog will sort you out for 15 quid.
Not as shiny as the EAI, but well-finished and reliable. -

the superstar may be shiny and expensive, but the normal EAI is neither, and very good quality

Is hubjub the usual (or even, only) source for EAI cogs?
A quick read of this thread says that they would be the wise choice for my planned Goldtec wheels, rather than the cogs Betd supply, so as to avoid this near-to-spokes issue.
The trouble is that with a prospective 48T chainring and my weak legs I'm looking for a 19T cog to give the kind of gearing that I'm after and hubjub only have up to 16T in the 1/8'' steel version.

Try Brixton or Cavendish Cycles, they keep a fair bit of stock in...

The On One cogs are OK, they're exactly the same as Surly's. Not checked the stock though.
Condor have usually got loads of cogs in.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll email hubjub too and ask if there's plans to get more in in the larger sizes.
I was thinking today that if Betd bill their cog as being a good match for the hubs, then it can't be a huge problem, since they're the folks that put the wheels together, right?
Did you ever get a response to your email about the issue bombadil?
It would be nice and easy to be able to order the cog & lockring along with my wheels from Betd, hence my hoping the Betd combo would work.

Nah, I'm sure it's Poland.
got a goldtec 16t 1/8th on goldtec hub. chain runs very close to the spokes - is this normal - do people put some sort of spacer on the inside?
