  • they're not listing the long sleeve ones yet, it seems... probably any day now, email them to ask.

  • These ones - but they are out of stock on the long sleeved just now it seems. Arse.

their hoodie jacket is great so i presume that the base layers would be nice too...

  • +1 for merino
actual base layers = definately rapha..
other option = howies t's with your standard armwarmers.
i get hot super quick and find that the howies T with arm warmenrs a good way to regulate my temp, being super easy to roll them up or down quickly while riding.

The Rapha Fixed - is lovely but definately smells unlike the merino. (several men have said that to me)

  • @tommy. sorry buddy can't rep you for that :(

  • I like the Infil ones. Currently £6.29 (l/s or s/s or vest) at probikekit.

They're a synthetic/wool blend, itch a tiny bit more than superfine merino (only notice for about a minute), regulate temperature as well, resist pong, and are longer lasting. Superfine merino gets holes in it quickly, from rubbing of bags/overgarments, washing machine, moths (they love the stuff).

  • bargs!!

  • Potentially stupid question, but:

Does it matter if base layers are worn inside-out? It always struck me as a bit crap that something meant to be worn close against your skin should have crappy labels and seams in it. So is the material that tech that it won't work if it's reversed?

    In before 'HTFU'.

  • they should be worn with tags out - to stop the tags from rubbing on your skin.

  • they should be **designed **with tags **and seams **out - to stop the tags from rubbing on your skin.

    fixed

Depends if it's a blend (more than one fabric) or 100% merino, poly etc.

If it's a blend you should wear them as intended. If 100% then it won't matter.

That is a fucking bargain. Cheers for that. Will still buy something in Merino seeing as so many peeps have a lot of good stuff to say about it but will definitely get me a few of these too. Too cheap not to give it a fair trial!

  • extonaustralia - $55aus for a long sleeve 100% merino which is something like 25 fine english pounds. Lasting well so far. Quite thick 'boingy' wool - thicker than Howies for example.

  • Canterbury rugby stuff is legit and not too expensive

  • Aldi Got some coming in on 18th, Only £8.99. Don't no if any good but prob cheap and cheerful!

  • In case anyone was wondering....the Rapha long sleeve base layers should be back in stock mid-October.

  • Endura or Swrve merino base layers are fantastic! and cheaper than the Rapha ones.....(everything is cheaper than Raph!)
I wore my endura longsleeve from london to brighton on the fourm ride in the pissing rain and was happy and comfortable all the way!

  • rapha do 3 for £90 on base layers (which includes long or short sleeve)

as far as I can see this works out better value than anywhere else

i have always found merino to be very long lasting

  • I've got 7 Decathlon short sleeved base layers - which are great and cost about £5 each. Yes they get smelly, but at that price I get a clean one every day.
Arm warmers are the answer to ss base layers and cold arms in the morning. That way I can leave the arm warmers out when I'm coming home, since it's often warmer in the evening than on the way in.
I'd also add a gilet as a must for the spring/autumn. I've just ordered a Pearl Izumi one from the Evan's sale to replace my tatty old Ron Hill.

  • As a longer term strategy you could sign up to email alerts from Howies on their website - they seem to have a merino sale every six months or so (you've just missed the last one unfortunately) and if you're on the email you can get in early before the stock runs out ... As an example of the discount on offer, I picked up a £55 l/s zip top for £25. They're great tops, really comfortable.

  • dhb are alright, wiggle.
mine is starting to smell though. very odd. it's pretty nasty after one ride in.

  • Looks like a have white hairy wrists.

    You do, stop pretending....

  • just got some specialized base layers
    very good and only 19.99

  • does anyone know of a make of long sleeve base layers which is cut for those with short arms?

  • the rapha one? yeah, they never smell, they're fucking amazing.

brilliant yes, but don't get the white one though it goes yellow
