I was riding skateparks ten years ago and never saw people riding bmx brakeless, ever. I think it's totally stupid and limits the capabilities of the rider (for flatland/freestyle stuff). I really think it's gotten so popular now as it's seen as the cool thing to do. It's the gay thing to do. I'm waiting for some clever twat to comment on my use of the word "gay" now.
