Ahhh berlin....spent many a happy long weekend there visiting my GF at the time. Must have gone there 30 times while we were together. The one memory that stays in my mind is Cranzler I think? a huge cake and sweet shop on the Ku dam. really nice cakes! Almost moved there back in 05. But in the end it wasn't to be.

okay i'm off to berlin for sept and oct (yay!). a few people have recently told me that the berlin cops are harsh on people riding brakeless. can anyone shed any light? anyone have experience of being stopped?
-

Yeah Teddy, they take it pretty seriously there. I was stopped a couple of times in Berlin at properly set up temporary cycle check points. They gave my bike a good going over, checking brakes, lights, everything to make sure it was in working order. The main bit of grief I got was for not having a reflector, but also for sloppy brake set up!
The most positive thing i can say is that they're also checking if bikes are registered and reported stolen, so there's a good chance that some thief riding around on your bike is going to get stopped. Unfortuntately, so are you ...
p.s. I can't say it enough, look out for them tramlines. And PM me if you want any top tips of bars, etc. - i lived there for a year.

I should have said - that was on a bike with front and rear caliper brakes.

so am i gonna get done for not having reflectors or brakes? can i use the "but it's vintage!" excuse?
-
• #63
only if you can say it in perfect German.
No, hang on, it was my terrible German that got me off with having no lights.

Just moved to Berlin from California, hit me up if you want to ride/need a place to crash. As far as cops... most of the time they are standing around in packs on street corners with bored looks on their faces, I have been smashing around like I am still in Oakland. The motorist are the only ones who seem pissed.

I may be coming to berlin (for the first time) as a rushed last minute breather before having to go back to uni. Next week.
Was gonna tag along with my sister who is also going, but dont want to get in the way of her and her BF. Also doubt they will have much time for bike stuff.
Would love to find some place that would rent me a fixed/track bike for a week, perhaps buy a frame while im there too.
Would love to hook up with some other bikey peeps, if you could take the burden of letting me crash on your floor then that is excellent, but unecessary. Going on some rides & checking out cool spots is plenty excellent.

after going in july i cant wait to get back there, its so good, and somehow we went to a foodfight between two areas on a bridge near hardwax, it was really good fun, plus all the flohmarkts and tape distros make it such a good city.

Think I am going to do a combined trip to Cicli Berlinetta and the christmas markets, and treat myself.

I found a great little store on the way to Keirin Cafe... On Warsawerstrasse (sp?), just before the bridge on the right... Tons of frames/parts, 99% road but a few track bits... Tiny little shop but a real Alladin's Cave...

Anyone been to Zapatha or Yaam? Two of my favourite places in the world!
