  • If you're just judging on "who's got the biggest steaks" then I suppose we lose

I'm pretty certain you can get a bigger, and better steak in London than Toronto. Steaks in North America are generally overcooked, tasteless crap, especially if they are stupidly oversized. For the best steaks it would have to be France.

I've had better Sushi, Portugese, Thai, Chinese, Italian and Greek in Toronto than I have in London, the only thing London beat it on was curry.

  • best Italian food I've had was in Rome.

    best curry= bloody tootin innit

just as well i fuckin love curry

  • Go here, you won't regret it.

  • cheers.

TBH I'm fat on south indian, it's all here. I'd be indebted to anyone who could point me to a more-than-decent Italian place

  • what i like about london is the slightly lost wide eyed look that people from the rest of the country have when they visit, they are easy to spot as they are usually wearing clothes that are 5 years out of date. they like to slag london off for it's noise, filth and indifference but deep down they are slightly in awe. i guess you could say that about new york paris and tokyo too but not about any other british city.

  • having just done a nashville, toronto, new york whirlwind tour. i can say this:
london is miles better than nashville (how did i live there for nearly 4 years? all there is to do is hang out with your mates and drink. oh. that'll be why. ace peoples) for things to do. nashville has better hot chicken. and friends who'll do anything. plus. you can play stupid games in the house, like "how many clothes can you put on all at once?" and not feel that you're missing out on something big and special.

i only saw a bit of toronto. it's a bit smug. london is better. scenery at lake huron is better than the scenery at tooting common. no wild bears in london. well, no wild bears with 4 legs and big sharp teeth.

    london vs new york?
i think if i had the chance to live there, new york might edge it.

  • Provincialist... Awe at the fact that their snot has suddenly turned black.

i liked it when all the slavs first came over. suddenly the tube was awash with stonewash denim and what looked like global hypercolour t-shirts.

nowadays some of my best friends are of slavic descent.

  • Inowadays some of my best friends are of slavic descent.

How terribly metropolitan of you... Well done you.
Memo to self - ascertain friends' antecedents.

    +1

The best steak (entrecôte) I've ever had was in Alpe d'Huez. London food isn't bad but the places I used to enjoy going to (like the New Picadilly in Soho) are all being bought out. Just takes a bit more effort to find good places now I suppose.

  • I'm from Sydney & came here for the Music biz . I worked on Kool & the Gang last Friday, Gary Numan on Sunday, Eric Clapton in Soho last night , Madonna at Wembley Stadium today & tomorrow, Stevie Wonder on Friday & Metallica on the weekend . I couldnt do that anywhere else in the world .

  • Not a music lover then? London's wasted on you Tommy Saxondale...

  • this thread has made me miss london a little bit, for the first time in a week of being away from it. cheers, guys.

  • Fashion = nonsensical bollocks. I wear t-shirts jeans and cycle in lycra ffs.. what would I know of 'fashion'?

    Fixed

no you couldn't, because wembley, soho, greenwich are all in London.

  • Just pretend you're mental in the head and all suddenly becomes clear...
I really don't like London anymore, I can suffer Brixton, just... If it wasn't for the good people of this forum I'd be an even grumpier old fart than I am already, you guys make it bearable... Maybe I've been here too long, done it and seen it kinda crap... Samuel Johnson was talking out of his sphincter... IMHO...

"No wise man will go to live in the country, unless he has something to do which can be better done in the country. For instance, if he is to shut himself up for a year to study science, it is better to look out to the fields, than to an opposite wall. Then, if a man walks out in the country, there is nobody to keep him from walking in again: but if a man walks out in London, he is not sure when he will walk in again. A great city is, to be sure, the school for studying life."

  • So has nothing changed in the intervening two hundred-plus years?
Possibly the reason you would not walk in again might now be a little more painful than witty discourse in the coffee house. :-(
    Just a thought...

A stab in the goolies mayhap?

  • Exactly...

What a load of bollocks. Someone writes a few well respected books and poems and then people use his musings as justification for a completely subjective opinion.

  • The countryside is made of mud, it stinks and you have to drive everywhere. It's inhabitants are ignorant, racist and stupid. Criminals roam unhindered by the Police who are corrupt and mercenary. Lack of public amenities and culture make the country dwellers indolent and apathetic, intellectual activity is discouraged, as is exercise. In-breeding is common and encouraged, as is violent and abusive public behaviour.

People say London town is dirty, but I don't get mud on my shoes in Bond St.

    Innit!
To be honest I really feel rather ambivalent towards London. Yes, I do live there.

  • I do like the green of London – so many great parks with cafes

  • In-breeding is common and encouraged.

"Goddamn you play a mean banjo!"
