  • So, it's September and winter has arrived :-(

Any tips / kit? (tyres? brakes? mudguards?)

  • for me, no guards, 700x23, brakes, oh and the sun shine!!!

  • depends if you want to arrive at your destination looking you got ebola halfway and your internal organs exploded out your anus and smeared themselves up your back.

  • yeah but hippy - lots of us aren't square enough to know about those sites..

  • no i just live somewhere hot!!!

  • I ride exactly the same bike in exactly the same way all year round. Only addition is crappy lights. never bothered with a mud guard

    exactly. HTFU!!

  • move to berlin. it's sunny and warm here.

  • i put on a rear guard some times... at one point i want a bike for every day of the year, but that will have to wait.

    too many germans though, shudder!!!

Until it ices over in winter..

  • exactly. HTFU!!

Remind me not to come training with you in the winter then.

  • The spray should be reminder enough.

    ok, will do.

  • I got some SKS Raceblades a little while back and they were a great buy. They pop on and off in about 20 seconds.

    back in my day.... ;)

  • There is one fella in my Saturday training group who says "Never been one for mudguards"

    He sits at the back.

  • Tip for winter riding:

    Vaseline.

Always carry a small tub when cycling. When rubbed onto exposed parts of legs BEFORE a ride, it will keep legs warmer, and make a waterproof barrier against rain, or pothole splashes.

I've cycled for full days in snowy conditions, but had used masses of Vaseline on my legs, and they were fine. Protects well against the wind also. And if you get a cut, or have a fall, it stops bleeding from skin abrasions.

  • No one would believe me if I said that was why I had a tub of Vaseline in my bag.

Skin is already a waterproof barrier. It's also breathable.

  • Yeh, skin is waterproof. That doesn't stop you getting cold when it's wet though does it? And by breathable I guess you mean you sweat through it; you certainly don't *breath *through it.
A little learning is a dangerous thing.

  • the wet weather meant i just got a puncture :(

  • I think that was probably something sharp.. rain doesn't usually bust through tyres..
