  • I've finished knocking together a bike for Feb

  • Nice! You went for the clear lacquer then.

  • Cheers ...It's gonna rust isn't it , the lacquer was plasticote, which has gone all white and blooming probably coz i sprayed it on too thick or too cold or its reacted with traces of oil or nitromores on the frame .It looks nice still, i like the way you can see all the braze around the bottle and brake hole that have been filled like a fried egg in reverse. Feb has such total faith in my brazing ability that she's prepared to ride around on it.... must be mental . You out tonight?

  • Should be out tonight, yeah. Working on a new section on my website with maps of routes I've taken around Cambridge. I should get it done quicker when I finish work tomorrow.

I'm also in need of some cranks, as I'm finding the disadvantage of buying cheap press-fit ones...

  • Hello, just joined the Cambridge group...
That bare metal finish looks great! I was considering doing the same on mine but decided to ge for a diy paint job instead (Zinc primer, filler primer and now im ready for the colour).
I'm interested to see how that finsh ages :)
Oh also what tip did you find that frame in?

  • It was an eighties road frame from a skip at one of these recycling centres . I've got quite a few frames i'm hacking about and putting in track ends at the moment . I have no luck with paint,it always seems to fuck up or fall off . I'm gonna stick to filing and brazing steel frames and get someone else to do the paint if i want it to look nice . Should come to meet us at the Maypole on Thursdays 6.30pm , there was only a few of us tonight we still went for a ride but seems a far cry from the hoards (10ish) that went out earlier this month.

  • I'll come and join you for a ride once I'm done building, but won't be drinking in the maypole with you seeing as I'm 17.
    :)

  • No probs we only meet outside there at 6.30 , you'll probably find most of us too slow . Alcohol has taken a terrible toll .

  • Helloo ASOF.

Like the ride, seems neat to me. Still interested in brazing mine?
    Cheers
    FA

  • Yes i'll give it a go .

  • hi asseen,
i met you at ricks last eek i have a yellow Raleigh with a black brooks.
i orderd my drop outs to day from ceeway they were pretty cheap at £6, so if you have the time it would be graet to get them done.

  • Hi Rupert , no worries I'll PM you my details

  • so i got some braising rods and flux today and had a bit of a play on some scrap steel ( i was toying with the idea of doing the drop outs myself) but i think i need a bit more/ a lot more practice before im at that stage so as soon as the drop out come threw my letter box ill drop them and the frame off with rick.

  • Do it ! Do it ! You've got a welding torch too? You will have to bend the track ends to make them sit parallel . Most of the work is in the prep , be careful when you cook the old road out . I usually cut them in half first so the chain stay and the seat post ends can be cooked out separately .

  • yeah iv got a torch at work iv been having some fun with it today but i think i got the wrong brazing rods from macays i asked for brass but i think it some thing else, it dosnt have a gold finish to it and its super brittle so im gonna have to get some from some ware else.
but i may risk it and do it myself.

  • got some proper brazing rods today and filled the holes from the head badges and the rear break holes.
im gonna do the drop outs myself i think i can do it but cheers for your help any way, when its all done ill post some photos of how it all happend.

  • Do you need an oxy-acet torch for this sort of brazing, Ive got a pretty high temp propane burner (gets reasonably sized bits of steel up to critical temperature pretty quickly) and would like to learn how to braze, I think It wont be hot enough? Do you need to be able to control oxygen supply?

  • I use an old oxygen and acetylene set . Can weld anything with it . BOC rental is expensive though

  • Nice to meet you mr Marxist fixsie
