Skipping?

  • Can someone explain that skippy thing that some riders do. Not sure of the proper term, skip stopping?

Is it a method of stopping? If so, does it have any benefits over skidding/backpedalling ?

Lastly, any tips of how you do it, tried and failed :(

  • Yeah, it's a way of stopping. It's a bit easier than skidding as you are applying the retarding (LOL) force when you don't have the resistance from the road. Also, it fucks your tyres a bit less.

To do it you pull up with your leading pedal to get the rear wheel off the ground. Sort of. Come to polo and I'm sure someone will show you.

  • you mean when you do like loads of little stoppies?

  • I kind of figured thats what it was, someone told me that there supposed to be easier than skidding.

I tried for ages but just couldnt do it, kept bunnyhopping!

I think Ill stick to skidding and reverse pedalling for stopping purposes, seems to work quite well.

Will try figure out this skippy nonsense next time I see someone doing it!

  • Object was teaching it at trixiedix a couple of weeks ago

its a bit like the ABS of skidding, you keep the pedals stationary as you bounce the back wheel up and down- each time the back wheel comes down it is actually going very slightly in reverse

it does not require the counterintuitive throwing your weight over the handlebars of a proper skid

  • it's somehow more effective than skidding. i dunno why, but it stops you faster.

  • You can also do them just using the back foot; push back to give yourself a bit of upward momentum and unweight the back wheel then release it and then push back again really quickly. Rinse/repeat.

  • thats how I slow down if I dont want to use my front brake, ie sharp corning in the wet.
it goes my old knees no grief

  • thanks to your good explanations, I went out and did it first try. I get it now!

    thanks

  • Best way to stop! Much easier than skidding. A touch of front brake to unweight the back wheel, then a touch of back pedal. Stops you faster than skids and much easier than switch skidding. Also good when your back tyre is worn through to fBRIC.

  • If you need a front brake for this 'skipping' bollocks.. why not use the front brake?

I don't get it.. I skid for a laugh but if I want to stop I skid but put all my weight back rather than forward.. combined with my rather nifty front brake of course. I am so SMRT.

  • using brakes is not "street". Geez, get with the programme, hippy

I have TWO brakes on my bike currently, im experimenting with different riding & braking possibilities.

Id never press a front brake to engage any kind of skid, sounds lethal.

But I have found this skipping method allows you to put more pressure into the rear wheel than skidding helping to stop quicker, but have also found its a bitch to start the skid if travelling at speed.

My favoured method of skid stopping so far is a skid/swerve combo. Spent the past two days trying to learn 180' rollout skids, and never fell over once. So ive come to the conclusion the swerve/180 skids are a safe method of collission evasion.

Surely this just means that you'll (potentially) be going backwards into whatever has jumped out in front of you?

You know my opinion of things "street" or hip or cool or whatever the fuck..

    glazes over :)

  • Skipping is an excellent way of adjusting your speed and also an excellent weapon in the war against roadie scum, utitlise when any cunt is drafting you... Shits 'em up good and proper... Think I learnt this off VB...

  • As if I'd sit behind any of you lot when I'm in roadiescum mode! :P

+1 yep been using this ever since somebody suggested it as a deterrent to halfwheelers and unwelcome drafters. Its a bit like braking suddenly in a car when a moped is tailgating you, probably very dangerous and stupid but the best way to give them a little hint.

  • yeah, flick the old back wheel and make some random movements to swat away slipstreaming scum. Not that I get many of them mind!

  • just pull a 3-mile long endo, while swearing and screaming at them over your shoulder. Works for me.

its takes quite a bit of effort and unweighting the rear wheel to go full 180,

when flicking the bike to the side at speed during a skid to swerve out the way of something, it seems a very controllable way to adjust speed and direction.

Also combinable with skipping to get the last bit of stopping.

Although im not the expert here, I came asking for advice. But practice teaches you a lot quickly.

  • i had a slip streaming idiot on my tail this morning. he was so busy trying to keep up with me that he did not notice a bus pulling out in front and crashed into me when I slowed down - so much for his multiple gears and 2 brakes

  • Well, freewheels don't and not paying attention don't really help your ability to slow down.
