Selling my geared bike - but for how much...?

  • Even though I only picked it up from Mercian the other week, a severe cashflow problem means I'm going to have to sell my geared Holdsworth - but I was hoping for some advice on how to sell it, and for how much.

It's an '80s Holdsworth Professional in Reynolds 531, resprayed and renovated at a cost of £220 by Mercian (stunning enamel paintjob) and equipped with Campag Khamsin wheelset and a mix of Veloce and Chorus groupset. The only thing not brand new and sparkling is the seatpost, which can easily be sorted out and cleaned.

I know that when it comes to eBay you get however much someone's willing to pay for it, but I'm well aware that a modern Campag equipped vintage frame is something of a niche market. Should I sell it as a complete bike, or try selling the parts separately? Should I put it on eBay or should I try selling it elsewhere?

And the last question - how much should I look for? I appreciate the renovation and respray was my choice, so don't expect someone to pay over £200 for it, but the Veloce/Chorus gruppo is worth something. I'm only really looking to get back what I paid for it all, so would around £500 be too much to ask?

  • bike market is really flat, even for high end stuff. :( always split and sell seperately for most ££'s.

    post a pic.

  • i think £500 is reasonable, personally. dale's right on the split and sell thing.

  • £500 sounds reasonable, but only to the right buyer. Split and sell.

  • what size is it, post it here as a complete, then split and sell

  • i'm in a similar situation, so i'm gonna slightly hi-jack this, sorry.

i was asking around £350 because the paintwork could be better. what do you think?

thanks, and sorry for the hijack! :D

    matt

  • Photos don't really do it justice, but here's a couple of pics of the frame before being built up, and the bike semi-built. Looks far nicer now with red bar tape etc.

The other half is now telling me not to sell, as I've spent so much time on it, but I'll see if it goes here or on eBay. If it doesn't I'll give it some thought then...

  • matt, what size?

  • Just over a day to go of a ten day listing on eBay but no bites yet. Part of me says to drop the start price, but I don't want to screw myself over.

Anyone reckon a drop to £450 would arouse interest, or should I grit my teeth and stick with the £500?

  • won't get anything with those prices. split and sell seperate.

  • what size is it?

and bring it down a bit, 500 is steep.

  • I'd stick. You can always re-list it.

Which bits are Chorus and Veloce, and which years?

  • if you split it, you can prob get over £500 for it. but that's cheap IMO

  • Which bits are Chorus and Veloce, and which years?

Veloce rear mech, chain, ergos and cassette. Chorus chainset. Veloce stuff is 2008 and Chorus chainset is probably 2007-ish since it's alu. All brand spankers and bought specifically for this build.

    Frame is 58cm traditional.

Not a massive problem to strip and sell, but as it's built up now it would be a faff to take it all apart again.

My biggest worry is losing money on the frame. Any thoughts on what that might fetch?

How much are you wanting for just selling the frames? Moving abroad, and don't want to take fancy caron/aluminium frame, fancy a good bit o' steel.

  • matt, what size?

54cm to top of top tube i think.

i'm not sure about splitting and selling, that means understanding the value or each component/group of components and since i've asked the question 'how much for the bike?' then i'd be here for days asking 'how much for the group set?' etc. unless dale feels like giving me a break down? haha! :D

  • ok fair point

  • freshly painted holdsworth road frame, you won't get money back :(

I don't mind splitting - the group will go quite easily, albeit having to faff with bits and pieces. Selling the frame was my concern - so if someone wants it I don't have a problem.

Wouldn't be willing to take less than £150 for it, but by all means if you're interested and the bike doesn't sell on eBay, you're welcome to it.

  • ok, give me a pm if it doesnt go on the bay, and we can talk folding pictures of the queen!

  • should get around £150, but no-where near £200+ :(

  • Frame is lovely.

As a complete bike it may not be to anyone else's taste but your own.

Break it up for for the win
