Yep, go for 3 cross on the back wheel, you probably already know this, but as the spokes are at more of an angle they can resist driving forces and transfer power better.
I do not think there is anything 'unclean' looking about it. On the contrary I think it looks great.
If you do decide to go for 2 cross, it will still 'work' , I have a 1970's 2 cross track wheel on one of my bikes. It doesnt seem to have ever needed retruing, but I had to tie the spokes to make it feel stiffer.
Go for 3 cross.
