Cool.

Every drop in tooth count shifts the wheel 1/8 of an inch further back.
White man with fork tongue speaks truth...

is that the same for teeth on the chainring?
hmmm, hmmm?

Yes.

The chain is 1/2 inch pitch. Add or remove a tooth and you're talking about half the pitch which is 1/4. This is split between above and below the chainstay so divide it in half again.
1/8 pitch FTW.

That makes my brain hurt...

That was the easiest way I could think to explain it.

It's not you, it's me... ;]

teenslain you are forgetting the other two factors.
1 - effective chainstay length
2 - angle of chain relative to effective chainstay. (i.e. size of chainring / cog.)
but as an approximation its fine. -

I get that, well explained. Where shall I send the money to?

you know what, the whole things sucks.
My wheel is up nice and tight with 50/19 and 50/20, but they are my road gears and I don't need tight clearances, if anything a longer wheelbase would be a nicer ride.
With 50/15 and 50/16, my track gears, the wheel only just sits in the dropouts, well outboard, not ideal for the track.so it's compromise, or take another chain (a link smaller) in my bag every week.
I can't imagine the snaplinks lasting too long in that situation, or the drivetrain wearing evenly..
ho-hum

I may be forced to go to BLB in a few minutes and see what they have to offer.
Not been there for ages, but I hear the real moody bird is gone so I may be able to get in and out without the usual patronising moodiness -
