My Geoffrey Butler seems to have the most slippery dropouts in the world- I'm getting busy with a 15mm spanner after every ride at the moment...

dammit: I noticed that as well!
I just got sick of it and left it slack. :) Just get a surly chaintug (or cheaper option). They work on front-facing dropouts too. And you can use it as a bottle opener. :)
