I have a cool weather softshell thing that's showerproof, and a very light very waterproof folding jacket that I put on if it's belting it down. It's not 100pc waterproof though, will still get damp if i'm riding in pouring rain for hours, but if i have another layer underneath it it's bearable.
Kinda wanted to find something middleweight, so bought a light gilet recently which seems to work quite well. Is quite waterproof/windproof but more breathable, not least because it has no arms. Figure I can put it over the softshell when it's chilly. Folds up very small too.
Have taken to carrying one or two things that fold very small because invariably the weather gets colder/warmer and having more options means I'm more likely to be comfortable. The softshell only really comes out in the cold now.
