i kno there is plenty other threads out there wit the same heading but im gonna jus say it. the new york fahgettaboudit chain CAN be cropped/snapped, search captaincropper. crops it in like 15 seconds. d-locks are the way to go. i use 1 new york fahgettaboudit d-lock (£75 from blb) and one mini-evolution (£35) to lock wheel to frame. till this day i have never known either to be snapped/cropped or leverage damaged. a chain no matter how thick could get cut. d-locks are safer.

I got a Fahgeddaboutit from Chain Reaction, it was about £55 delivered. I've also got an Abus whatjamacallit (the cable one that goes round your waist) which cost about £50 a few years ago. I use both at the same time and have never had any problems.
If someone wants your bike enough, they'll get it, but making it difficult will deter the Brick Lane thief types, when there are so many other, shittily locked up, bikes out there.
Get a good lock (or two)!
Oh, and check that pitlock thread, those things look pretty amazing, should mean that you only need the one lock...

this is because your bike is so small they couldn't sell it, even if they stole it.

ah, a post i wanted to write but didn´t dare! Think the other posts are quite messy and doesn´t really come to a conclusion.
My plan is to use a few different locks so it would need more than one kind of tool to nick my bike. I´m thinking d-lock for frame + back wheel to post, then maybe a chain / cable / steel-o-flex for front wheel + frame to post. Or maybe just get two d-locks?
what about these kind of locks, are they any good at all?
also heard rumors about a lock that comes with an insurance, is that true?

No, they COULD sell it! There's loads of 'compact' sized people out there! Loads... erm, like Kylie, and erm.. Yorgo! Yes, Yorgo would buy it! runs off wailing

That's the Abus one I've got. Goes round your waist a treat and you don't even notice you've got it on. Mini d-lock in your back pocket/waist band and you're set. Or pitlocks and one lock.
This isn't a conclusion, by the way, just what works for me - I'm sure there'll be people who think that's the stupidest combination ever...

um actually the captin cropper video, when you look at what they claim is a Fahgeddaboutit chain, the actual chainlink only has 4 sides (its looks like a box when its cut) where as a real Fahgeddaboutit chain has 6 sides (looks like a hexagon if you cut it) so though it is impressive that he managed to cut through all those chains it wasn't really a 'proper' test.
Your lock will always be able to be broken by something, whether its a power tool or a set a bolt croppers, and if somone REALLY want's your bike they will get it, but for me the Fahgeddaboutit offers the added deterant that people know its a really hard chain to break, and so are less likely to try, also due to it having a mini D lock there's no chance of it being broken with a car jack etc.
Also on the insurance question, none come with insurance, but the Fahgeddaboutit locks come with a guarentte, if the lock is broken (and you have a piece of the broken lock to prove it) then they will pay for your bike, up to the value of £1300. they have more about it on their website. hope this was helpfuk

Abus Steel-o-Flex and lightweight Abus Granit Futura D-lock for me. The beauty of the Steel-O-Flex is its ability to go round most London street furniture. I also have a Kryptonite Motorsport New York Lock I leave at work. It's too heavy to carry, but ridiculously strong.

too weak, easily cutted through with a simple decent cutter from B&Q.
when I got my bike locked up with that and a Evolution Mini - this one got cutted, but Evo Mini didn't despite showing sign of attempt.

Get the lock from America.
Fahgettaboutit Mini - £50 inc. postage (didn't get charge with custom - they claim the lock cost $9.99!)
Evolution Mini - £25 on some website here from the UK.
cheaper than buying a Fah Mini with full RRP.

not in stock - you could try http://cyclexpress.co.uk/products/New_York_Faghettaboudit_Mini.aspx about the same price.

Cycle Surgery are stock heavy in most of the Kryptonite locks...
Don't dismiss the ABUS... -

I have two of these- one that someone with a more "variable" set of ethics than myself has attempted to cut through. They failed.
Anything- absolutely anything, including welding your bike to the street stand will fail in the end. Sadly you just need to make your bike more of a pain in the arse to nick than the next bike along, or make it too inconvenient to steal in the time available.
The General Electric 7.62mm Mini-Gun with T1000 Sentinel Unit is the only choice if you want to know that your bike will be there when you come back.

Obviously there isn't a lock that are 100% less likely to be cutted, the only difference is how hard/easy it is to break it, that flexible lock get cutted easily with tools you can get from B&Q, the Evo Mini however required a bit more than a simple cutter to break it.
Fah Mini and Evo Mini FTW.

Depends on where you have to lock up though, if there's only hefty lamposts or telegraph poles, no railings etc, then a d-lock isn't going to be much use.
Just thinking that one thing doesn't suit everybody.
Hello.
First post here, been lurking in the background for a while (this site has been so helpful, so thank you).
My new and first ever fixie build will be finished pretty soon. I've got an OnGuard U-lock from my previous bike, but considering i wasn't too worried about it being stolen (shite racer) i didn't invest much in the lock. Now that i have something i am proud of and have spent a fair few bob on i want to have a lock that i can combine with the OnGuard U-lock and have a tiny bit of piece-of-mind.
I was thinking about getting the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit chain lock, its seems to be about the best one out there. Was just wondering what are peoples thoughts on this lock and what locks people around London are using to protect their much loved bikes.
Any comments would be much appreciated.
James
