Wheelset options, advice?

Posted on
  • Well, i've got the frame, the cranks BB, stem handle bars, and think I've located the right forks. I'm now thinking wheels.

    a) purchase hubs spokes and rims tires and tubes - build up for £25 at bike shop
    b) purchase otp set (any suggestions £120 range)
    c) buy some off ebay/here

Not sure which will give me best value for a light set of wheels.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers.toby

  • a)

  • a) give to me £10 per wheel

  • Cheers rusty, If so, would you recommend any particular hubs and rims I can get hold of cheaply...

  • that slightly pushes me over my price point dogsballs, take £5?

  • your budget was 25 for a bike shop to build, how is 10 too high from dogs?

    A) Buy bits, build yourself.

  • Ah, misunderstanding, that would indeed be a very good deal (sorry dogs)! unfortunatly I'm up in Nottingham, would make things tricky.

  • I did think these looked a good deal, but I suppose I could make them up cheaper.. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=28614

  • a) Take dogs up on his offer

    b) Use these guys... This would be a good bet.

  • I'm liking the outspoken cycles site! Miche Primato vs Miche Primato LF? I'm erring on the cheaper set, my dropouts are 130mm but I think I could get 120mm in! and 42mm chainline should be about right..

  • 10mm is big difference and you'll have issues with hub slipping in the dropouts. From the site:

We've featured a well-balanced range of wheels that aims to appeal to all users, whether beginner or professional, and by honing in on a small selection we can keep prices low. However, we know how personal this decision is, so if we haven't listed what you're after, drop us a line and we'll quote you a price as long as our suppliers can provide the components.

I suggest using a 130mm hub and mavic open pros are an excellent value, quality rim

  • Right, I've emailed the shop, we'll see if they have anything in 130mm.

    Thanks for your advice Broker!

  • Pete at Outspoken is off on a 6 month ride to Kenya soon so they are closing the shop down whilst he's away. They stopped taking orders for wheels yesterday I think - that's what their home page says at least;

  • Between the Miche Pistard and The Navigator Pista (both the same price from ribble) what should one go for?
