Lived in Dalston for 3 years and have never had any trouble - actually the best place we've lived in over here (after getting bored of Tufnell Park and Stoke Newington).
If anything my only worry is that it's getting too gentrified. Luckily the Shackelwell Lane area of Dalston is definitely not as bad as Victoria Park Village (which looks like Chelsea) or Broadway Market (full of Shoreditch scenester twats). In Dalston you still have lots of Turkish, Jewish and Afro shops - and it looks like they're there to stay (not getting priced out by trendy cafes).
Just don't leave your fancy bikes locked outside on Kingsland Road or Dalston Lane though.
Bits of Homerton still look a bit rough n ready though. But I'd rather have that sort of roughness than a shithole like Camden Town etc. ;)
