thread hijack (sort of): does anyone else (other than me) not insure their bikes and just never leave them anywhere they're likely to get stolen / vandalised?
Well my bike is automatically covered on my house insurance for theft at or away from the house...but only up to £400. I could pay more to increase that value, but it hardly seems worth it - easier to pay that extra in the event of needing to replace the bike.
But I rarely leave the bike in public. At work it's locked and chained inside the building, ditto at home.....

Hello there,
I was just about to have a look at getting insurance for my bicycles, does anyone have any tips?
http://www.cycleguard.co.uk
Seemed quite reasonableBut are there better ones? Is it worth joining the LCC or something to get special discount rates somewhere.
Whats the score wonderful people of LFGSS???

Search the forum, it's been covered at length before.
Think M+S is preferred.

I use Endsleigh. Got both of my bikes covered. Their bike insurance covers up to £1500 (or something) including accessories.

hey everyone. I did check out the thread discussion 4307, before submitting this. But wondered if any further knowledge was out there regarding bike insurance, I am starting Art school in Oct in London. I do not own a home but will be renting, ( so if anyone got a spare room going please do let me know) so I guess I wont have home insurance. Can you get bike insurance for one bike and one laptop, to be used outdoors. These items are the only expensive items I have.
I have a Nagasawa which I might have to sell if I dont get some funds, but with all your response of "fuck art school keep the bike" in a previous post, I might just do that and get seriously into debt. BUT I do not want to go around town without insurance. Can you get health cover too, I broke myself fro 3 months and caould have done with being covered.
I am moving into Central in 3 weeks, when is a good time to finally catch up and meet some and all of you. I can't wait. XXXXXXXXXXXX -

You don't need bike insurance to see me I'm perfectly safe Object, HIppy and BMMF on the other hand are all dodgy.
Checkout M&S home insurance I hear it's good.

wait.. when did we need this in the UK?
err, my bikes were always covered on my parents home insurance (even when i was off at Uni) but i had Endsleigh for my person stuff, and i had mixed results. they replaced my Creative when it broke (i had accidental damage cover in my room, so, err, it 'fell off my desk')
but they wouldnt replace my stolen ice hockey stick, cos i didnt have a receipt for it.
i really dont think my post helps you at all, but, when has anything ive ever written on here done that.
i dont have any insurance in japan, and dont need it :D (granted, i have a fuji, but still)

Bike-specific insurance is a rip-off. I went with M&S contents insurance but not sure if you can do that in share accom. There's other threads on here about share house insurance.

bike specific = cycleguard. expect to pay 10% of the value per year!

I've got a room. i sent you a pm. Agreeing with hippy bike specific insurence is expensive, maybe just always keep it inside? Art school these days requires you to have a nice bike.

meh cycleguard, I was covered by them for a while but stopped it after I found out that only if the complete bike was stolen while tethered by diamond cords to the gates of Buckingham palace would I receive the depreciated value of the bike..
I think if im unlucky enough to get my bike stolen now I would either put a new one on the credit card or increase my overdraft and pay off what I would a month as if I were on the tube
until such times the bike will not leave my sight when locked up ;)

My friend does that thing where he calls the west end 'central'. "I'm in central!". Pet hate. It's clearly 'town'.

Hippy's right about M&S insurance as they won't cover people living in shared accommodation.
Bike insurance is a rip off and it makes more sense to put aside a bit of money each month in a savings account so if you do suffer the misfortune of having a bike nicked then you have some money to replace it with. If your bike doesn't get stolen then you have a nice little sum to spend on a new bike.

Check out the LCC insurance provided by butterworth.
They insure for parts theft and malicious damage as well as having your whole bike nicked. Not a bad price either for some nice peace of mind.

Am I the only person on here who's never had a bike or bike-bit nicked?
