that frame can't be that strong, because in most cases the "crumple zone" wheel lacing should have given before the frame
crap! -

Is that a dogs-crumplezone-balls wheel? :)

i saw someone on a fixed bike today.. with only a back brake.. seemed rather odd to me!
and the other day i seen someone on a single speed with only a front brake, seemed odd!

If I can hurt ped with brakes (blood everywhere type injuries)...
do you think I will kill them with out brake? -
• #82
I find riding brakeless makes you more aware, you simply have to think quicker and that makes you a more skillful rider. You have no choice but to think harder. I've had cars pull out on me, I managed to just turn in with them. Depending on how you have a front brake set up, attempting to brake too sharp is way to risky.

u ride like a mad man on the road that nite i saw ya . . . but its tru that u said tho . . .best way to learn is jus go brakeless and ull pick it up . . .
riding brakeless doesnt make u cooler its how u wanna ride . . . -

Riding brakeless contains anti-oxidants and replenatudinising enzymes that give the impression of firmer looking skin.

Over on the forums on fixedgeargallery people have made the very valid point that even if it's not your fault, if you hit someone riding brakeless - worst case scenario, imagine a kid running out from behind a car right into your path, getting knocked down and breaking something - the police will throw the book at you if you didn't have a brake, and if the injured ped wanted to try to sue you for the injury, they'd be able to argue that you were negligent just for riding a bike with no brakes - particularly given that the law requires you to have two.
If that doesn't faze you, have at it.

some people who ride brakeless manage to stop o.k.
because they ride so fucking slowly. -
• #86
I think that fixed wheel set-up is regarded as a rear brake. Having said that, my advice would be you can't have too much stopping power. Never mind the mutilated bodies and blood all over the place, think about the damage to your bike. With frames and parts costing as much as they do, a pair of brakes is cheap insurance. As for skidding to a stop, how much do you pay for tyres? Get real!

these people are known as "Morons"
I saw this bloke riding a bike, track drops, little one-finger brake lever up by the stem and.....
gears.
he'd put that set up on a geared bike.
I give up.

I ride 50/15 brakeless frequently, don't see what all the fuss is about.
if you ride too slowly, you'll slip down the banking, mind.

yea but only if you ride with clips and straps or spds. that is the only way you can properly control the rear wheel on a fixed - if you can use both the pull and push to control it. so basically, no brakes and no clips is dum. period. however, nobrakes with clips is less dum as you have one brake i.e the back one, and its fine if you can do it and not be a hazard, but its still illegal with good reason. just as dum and illegal is riding fixed with no clips and only front brake. i am guilty of that as i often wear trainers to cruise around to the pub or dance or whatever instead of my poncy northwaves.

i knew someone would do that...

Just because your bike has a brake doesn't mean you have to use it. The only reason why people ride without is for looks.
Go on, try and argue round that.

it's one less thing to get stolen off my bike?
-
• #95
Yeah coz brakes are really sought after items..

• #96
he did say to try and argue :-)

Oh, ok, in that case.. brakes limit your ability to do those really important things like barspins.
Brakes weigh far too much for Col d'Clerkenwell.
Brakes might take up room on your bars already clogged with hrm, power meter, gps and lights.
-

Or maybe it's a thing they'll steal instead of that brooks, for some reason? A little bit of diversion.
I'm going to spray my brakes gold. -

Most brakes are held on by 2 allen key bolts (especially on the kind of bike capable of doing bar spins anyway). hardly an effort to take it off, and you're (probably) not going to be bar-spinning in traffic. :)

that isn't the case for all of those who ride brakeless
