  • u gotta be a snob to refuse living in hackney

what if you just don't want to live there?

  • nah perhaps i said that completly wrong lol
but to refuse moving into an appartment just because its located in hackney
    its a perfectly fine area

  • What pj (pj) and mikec said.

In the 4 years I lived there:

1 bike stolen from inside communal hallway
    1 gun pulled on me
1 nearly knifed on my own doorstep
1 friend mugged on my own doorstep
    Countless giros nicked.
Countless fuck ups by local benefits agencies, usually involving me walking miles between offices, and filling out fresh claims every month
6 months compulsory JobClub, being told to have nice shoes for interviews and apply for as much cold calling work as possible
3 counts of being sold something under the pretence of it being something else, and ending up sleeping in doorways
1 count of front door being kicked in by police with dogs at 5.30am on Sunday morning when they were actually looking for the bloke next door
    Blah blah blah

I lived between Dalston and Hackney Downs, sandwiched between the 2 major crack streets - usually self-contained, but people strayed. I don't mind visiting bits of it, but there's no way I'd ever live there again.

  • haha u lot must be unlucky im 17 in the prime age to be targeted in and around hackney, yet ive found more problems at home (islington), yet i feel if u know the roads to stay away from u will be fine

  • i'm big on stock rants.

er - what is a 'creative'? i was using the term a little facetiously. i tend see it as an ironic, self-aggrandising, specious term for people who aren't actually creative at all. maybe i'm wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

i think you are very right. it's amazing the people you meet who like to think of themselves as creative or working in 'the creative industry' but being an account handler or selling advertising space isn't creative.
selling pencils doesn't make you an artist.

  • Spend some time in the area before moving there if you can. Nothing compares to first-hand experience. As other people have said, there are good parts and bad parts.

It's probably worth mentioning that when I lived there, nosferatu was between 1 and 5 years old, and it was definitely a grimmer time socio-economically back then.

Don't be a dumbass. You have yet to be mugged/raped/murdered because you're 17.

It's not like you go into hackney (or any area of london for that matter), and are immediately targeted. It's down to luck. People on here have bad experiences because they've had far more time for them to happen in.

  • Although 17 and male puts you more squarely in the contemporary knife-related crime demographic.

  • yea thats true, but i have had plenty of trouble more then my fair share, being just 17 i have spent the last 4-5 years living pretty much 'on road', ive been approached, mugged, battered, seen much, much worse, but its not down to the area being hackney, its just london these days, hackneys not the best of areas but far its not the worst either, perhaps im only talking about my age group but having been on the streets pretty much everyday and seeing the enviroment around me i would say parts of hackney are lovely and parts are perhaps not.

  • I think it also depends on the colour of your skin, as well.

  • yup very true im asian which means im either really lucky or really UNlucky.
at times ive had young black youths hugging me asking me to join there 'gang' whilst turning to my friends and completly battering them right infront of me unable to do anything.
or ive had it the other way round casue i have slgithly long hair and there like ure not white why u got long hair for an getting battered, works both ways.

  • it's a hard knock life. like i said, try the mean streets of barnstaple, young man.

"'i've seen things you people wouldn't believe..."

well then the question is do u feel lucky Vinz?

  • well then the question is do u feel lucky Vinz?

Indeed. To be fair, that is true of wherever you are in London, the UK, or the world.

  • I saw more 'on street' shit in Chelmsford than I did in Hackney, and more brutal fights in village pubs.

  • fuck hackney..

I'm moving to stratford in 2011

  • Oh. Where should I live? (Does anyone have a link to the previous discussion on the best parts of London?)

  • Vinz, truth be told, it doesn't matter (with obvious extremes taken into account). Hackney/east is no worse than anywhere else in London.

The thing about moving to London in general is that you have to be willing to deal with a higher chance of being a victim of crime. It's still only a chance, and this is true of anywhere.

I've lived in brixton for a year, without trouble, but my flatmate has been mugged twice right outside my front door. He walks around in 3-piece suits (actually, his most recent fashion has been wearing boxer shorts AS SHORTS) and perpetually wears a boater, so go figure.

What area of hackney is this room located? that's the most important question, really.

In terms of price, south london is cheaper than north. If you're willing to make the commute, brockley/lewisham area is really nice, and so is camberwell. From where I am it's fairly quick (15 mins if not less) to get to the west end.

  • fuck every area. get over it, spend a few days and see if you like it. anyone that says 'to many fixies' is a hypocrite. any one says that they see blood on street from murder mile is a liar. hackney is the same as any other area - there is good and bad. if you're too worried about your safety go to the countryside ...hear that is nice there. also boring.

ps. 15mins to city with disregard to law

  • depends a lot on where the room is. I live in dalston now, really like it. been a year in shoreditch, didn't like it at all, and one year off mare st which was good too.

Let us know where the room is and it'll be easier to advice

I didn't say the blood was anywhere near murder mile. It was once, about a year ago, south of Broadway Mkt. I called the police, they said it had already been reported by someone who witnessed the fight. I think you're conflating my comment with the generalised negativity on this thread.

As I said previously, I've never really had any problems in Hackney.

Oh and about 10-20 minutes for me. Depends whether I want to need a shower when I get there or not.

Its actually on Mare Street, above a phones 4u shop. Im coming to London tomorrow to look at it and hopefully a few other places I've sourced through gumtree. One that is in Seven Sisters?

i admire the way you worked your way through the nursery stages to post a really measured comment; well done.

i always say to many fixies, "you're a hypocrite".
