  • to be fair, what is the point powder-coating spokes?? just get a damn can of paint and spray them!

  • i have a stem and some risers i want powdercoating white so count me in if a group job goes down.

  • RPM [quote]sorry dale, but BOLLOCKS.

    Fight! Fight! Fight!

  • Yeah, I have Open Pro's and if the fattest man alive can use 'em, then anyone can..

  • stevo_com deep-v's are good and stiff

stiff does not always = good when you talk about rims.

it's how you tension your spokes, as a wheelbuilder you must know that too stiff a wheel results in an unnecessarily harsh ride at best and broken spokes at worst.

  • ok so i spoke to armoutex they said they cahnge the price from min. £45 depending on the amount of work

i still think it would be cheaper, but they may think we are scamming them

altho they said that they couldn't quote over the phone only when they saw all taht needed to be done

    what do people think

  • Dogs' little runner arms probably can't get the tension high enough on the Open Pros :P
Bloody amateur! (disclaimer: I don't build wheels, never will. I don't want to die that way)

  • Flickwg: Count me in. If we could leave till next month, though, as I'm broke, with a tax bill round the corner just to rub it in?

  • fc9k +1 for the white powder coated spokes. Anyone got any knowledge of powdercoating rims? I'd quite like to get my open pro's done so i'm not tempted to get horrible heavy deep vs...

you can do it, and it will be bullet proof. powder will stick to anything metal as it uses electricity and makes a really neat static electricty sound when you spray it. i powder coated my first thingy today, it was fun.

  • andyf Does anyone have any experience of Alien Bikes? More specifically their wheels? I talked to the guy and you can get a set of wheels shipped over for US$221 or £110.

They are "New School black on black style, with strong 32mm deep section pinned-joint rims and 36 spokes laced 3-cross to our high flange hubs. Single-sided for fixed only. Includes 1/8" 16T cog and lockring. Replaceable cartridge bearings. Black stainless 14g spokes with black brass nipples. Non machined sidewalls for a clean look"

They look good, and the price is great, but what is the quaility like?

I'm building a similar set of wheels at the moment and looked into buying that set.

I bought on-one high flange hubs at £15 a pop!

They look Identical to Novatech hubs. Looking at the pics on alien-bikes.com my those are very similar, if not the same. Alien cranks are more available as 'Andel', or in Japan 'Radius'. They have a good reputation and appear on a 'real' track bikes over there.

What I really want to know is if that Alien Bikes frame is any good as I'm looking to buy a Soma Rush, an IRO Angus or something but those lugs look so good!

Has anyone seen or tried one? I don't fancy buying blind on a new companies 1st frame.

  • They probably are identical. Most stuff is made in the same factory in Taiwan and then stickers/graphics added for each manufacturer.

  • didnt alien make some crazy brakes a while back?

  • Only one good film.

  • so anyone seen one of the frames yet>? they look pretty tidy

  • so anyone seen one of the frames yet>? they look pretty tidy

I've been thinking about an alien frame for a while and would be interested in seeing one in person if anyone has..? are they based in the US or Norway? frames look like a decent price, and they do a crazy green colour too.

  • don't think anyones made the leap

  • once my mrs gets a payrise I think i might. fingers crosed

  • Guys,
What do you think about that? Can you give your opinion?
(if you don't know about bike frame making and you want to criticize, let us know)

  • looks pretty tidy to me, quite good they offer the unfinished options

  • nice job. not a fan of the web at the back of the BB, but the rear drops are lovely.

    this isn't a carhartt frame?!?

  • I don't know carhartt, what is it?
This frame is an "Alien" Bikes.
    370$ (~200£) plus 70$ shipping
I bought one, I'll let you know how it rides

  • did you weigh it?
double butted cro-mo tubing, doesn't sound like the lightest...
looks nice tho. i'd like to see it finished

  • also any opinions on their cranks? look like as cheap option or are they just fsa's or something rebranded?

  • Kazane, Andel etc rebranded I believe. Check tokyofixedgear.com for the same product in London.

I like this frame. I'm resisting urges because I really don't need another track bike. :o
