hi there,
get yourself down to Oxford Cycle Workshop on Magdelen road,
Its a good bunch of people, and we sometimes go for rides, alleycats are organised, CM, etc, etc.
Alexis is the guy you want to speak to.
It is more fixed but ever growing, and totally non discriminatory.
I'll be up there from mid september.

Work in London but live just outside. Can get to Oxford easily enough. Never thought to ride around there, but could be a laugh.

Arousing stuff. A friend of mine at the uni told me about alley cats about 6 months ago but I had completely forgotten what it was called, probably a combination of long term sleep deprivation, binge lifestyle and being dropped on my head a few times as a child. I’ll pop into the workshop when I’m back for event info and get the diary filled up. Don’t get much time off (I’m a chef, not an angry one) but I’ll be able to get the days off with enough notice.

Cheers for your help, see you September time.

So you don't swear at vegetarians then? Good! :)
My girlfriend lives near Wallingford and I'm hoping to move into the area. Oxford seemed to have bikes everywhere when I visited! I'd love to get involved with some rides if I'm ever in the area with a bike, I currently have a ss mtb but am also building a super cheap seventies racer (rescued from a garden!)
I'll have to pop into the Oxford Cycle Workshop at some point, would they be able to help with super cheap fixie conversions? I'll probably need advice/parts soon, especially a rear wheel and transmissiony stuff.

The number of people riding ss and fixed in Oxford has increased a lot this summer, there's Langsters, Filmores and conversions all over town - I live in a sleepy side street in East Oxford and in addition to my 3 neighbours who ride fixed there's a Trek T1 randomly chained to the lampost at the end of my street tonight, in the same spot where a Mercian and Gios conversion were parked a few weeks ago.

bikes are bikes.
in Oxford theres thousands of people on em wherever you look.
A lot of them are old & beat up. I imagine only 1 gear works. lol.
Ive never understood the concept of a 'single speed scene' In a sport where gears are a necessity such as XC mountain biking, people riding SS are doing something different enough to separate it as a scene.
In terms of riding about nippy bikes around the city, what difference do gear ratios or freewheels make?
Where I am, Im very lucky to see anyone else on a bike. If I happen to see anyone whos NOT riding a broken mtb on the pavement, Im a little awestruck and try to say hello.

i don't really understand what you are getting at. i posted this thread to find out if there was a group of people in oxford who met up and rode singlespeed bikes.
by asking this i am not saying that gears are unnessary or in anyway bad. I also ride X.C which in opinion is totally different to tearing about about a city on a fixed geared bike i would class it as a different sport. perhaps thats why the different sports have differnt names.....

hahaha,
I should really learn to punctuate.
I meant the idea of a 'single speed scene' in cities is silly. Where as, XC mtb on 1 gear is very different to doing it with, and definetley has a separate scene.
Ive never got on with multiple gearage, my mtb is singlespeed, although its more of a dirt jumper. If I had the money, and drove I would build up a geared mtb and do some 'proper' XC though.

ok , ok .but are we going for a ride or not ?
Hello, never been on here before, never ridden with a club, moving to oxford in last week of Aug and want to get involved in some singlespeed weirdness.
Currently running a bit of a mongrel, basically a 70's road race frame which i think has a bit of history (won't bore you to tears..yet) and everything else has pretty much been found on the super cheap/wheely bins. 'cash flow' problem has now been resolved hence the move!
running a freewheel because i like going up hills then going down them at a thousand mph, do i have to change to fixie to come and play?
