How tooled up are London thieves?

Posted on
  • Planning on a few trips to London with my bike now im rolling again.

Was wondering how tooled up Londons famous velocipede burgalars are?

Got a a pair of D-locks one is a £35 squire and the other similar to entry level Kryptonites, I think they are strong enough for my needs.

What im worried about is picking of these locks, and pinching of parts.
I know that they are fairly easily pickable for those in the know.

But is that something bike thieves bother with?

Also, how much do I have to worry about component theft. My bars and stem are pretty ordinary but I have a nice tomassini steel aero fork & campag chorus front brake.

The brake would be VERY easy to take, and it would devastate me as I loooove it.
I also have a aero seatpost & kashimax saddle I like.

My cranks are nothing exciting, but its always a pain to find decent 165's I can afford so I definetly dont want them to dissapear. Do thieves have crank pullers?

Also is vandalism, random bike smashing common?

Sorry for the paranoia, but its be good to hear any useful knowledge people may have as its taken forever for me to get this bike together.

    thanks

  • If the paranoia is getting the best of you then take a look at www.pitlock.com.

  • generally

but it all depends on where you park it

  • dont park it....stay on it doodes

  • tooled up to the hilt.
    This is John Wayne country

    hee ha !!

  • post a pic, i'll tell ma boys to keep an eye on it for ya.

  • Just paranoia mate, all you really need is simply common sense that it, a good common sense can save you some trouble and risk as well as carefully locking up the bike.

the area you really need to be careful in is the E postcode area.

  • I'd worry more about the mandems who let the shotties talk and shank bare mans blad

  • i iz gonna lick you wiv ma tools blud!

  • i iz gonna lick you wiv ma tools blud!

I think you need to drop a n/h after that as that sounded hella gay

  • London theives? They ARE tools.

  • more likely to steal the whole bike instead of bits. unless its left for a long time.

  • They don't bother picking locks.
Angle grinders and bottle jacks work much quicker.

Sell your bike and go everywhere by foot.

    That's quite a big area :O

    Are you including Chingford (E4)?

    And what about Walford (E20)?

  • Cunts mate the lot of them if you don't want to lose it don't leave it

  • Grow a pair.

    That usually helps.

  • thieves in Dalston have everything; allens keys, crank pullers, even b/b tools -
when it comes to dismantling your bike, they're bold enough to take your brake calipers and levers, wheels and handlebars in broad daylight (this happened to someone on Kingsland High St) but they tend to only take the cranks at night.

For shizzle, especially E14, it's a dangerous area!

  • I think you'll find being in close proximity of E17 is where you have to be really careful, be even more careful when you are in E17.

  • hahaha
