Timberland acquired howies but howies will run independently from Timberland.
"Sold out"
Explain to me how this is a bad thing? If you was running a company and you was offered the chance to expand your business you would say no?

i personally know david and claire howes, yes it is a big oppurtunity, but have you seen the catalogues? hardly timberland material...
-
• #4229
So are you saying that the range has changed since they was acquired by timberland?
-
• #4230
no, not at all... but they seemed so set on being a small local operated buisiness, and that seemed to be their selling point, their slogan. and yet they accept funding from slave drivers, timberland...

I totally understand your point.
Timberland do need to work on their ethics a bit maybe.
But again when it comes down to it all that Timberland have gave them is raw money.howies originally did want to expand, but they wanted to do it without cutting corners and as ethically as possible even if it does take longer.
Timberland arent perfect but they arent BP oil and both the companys ranges are in the same category.Therefor I think that the deal was appropriate.
Of course people are entitled to their views by this is from my point of view.

True they were "unipak" but it's A. my first bike and I built them myself and changed hubs....how many 27 spoke track hubs have you ever seen??
and
B. They may be "unipak" but they're still more original than everyone out there with a Deep-V and a Phil, they cost me a lot less too and they're good wheels so...... To be honest if it's what I get off on then what's wrong with putting it up here?? I've had nothing but compliments on it so...no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no

david and claire are contracted in for ten years to keep the whole shebang the same. they went through something like 4 re-morgages of their own home to keep the business going, several bank loans and help from friends. a bit of stability for their family and business and workers was the goal.as i understand it timberland has got quiet a good social/eco policy going though folks dont know about it. it aint perfect, but then, for me i think its better than a lot of companies. who doesnt own a pair of addidas/nike sneaks, or buy non fair trade from chain coffee stores, or get their skinny jeans from top shop?? c'mon its easy to shoot down someone who takes cash from a big corp but the upshot is that the company stays the same, from the design team to the warehouse folk packing and sending stuff. hell they've got compost bins in the office and they recycle plenty, try to use low impact materials and advocate sustainability all the while making products that last and arent too shabby. how many high horse-ers out there do that? sometimes they make mistakes, everyone does but they are trying. dont buy what you dont like i guess.
as for the advert from clockwork... jeeez, how many times do i have to say it, socks are not sexy.

i must say that this is extremely lovely and i would be honoured to own it but...........
to be very picky, the back wheel doesn't quite match the the curve on the down tube, maybe a 650 with a shorter chain. have seen this loads around this forum and anyway, sex, but those two curves being so close together but not quite the same............. -

a courier type lived next door to me last year who had a frame which had a similar set up to this. the back wheel came right the way throgh the split down tube, was beautiful. think he changed it for a steam roller though. i asked him about it once but i was on my lamester at the time so he was kinda short. not sure if he's on here. lived around camden/holloway road if thats a help.

i used to design for timberland, their ethics in apparel were far better than 99% of any brands out there. no howies for sure, but still. shame the clothes sucked asshole.
they sold their soul!
