My First Build/Conversion, Need some nuts!!

  • Alright there, wasn't sure where to put this as its half a 'look at my bike' thread and half 'wanted' thread but anyway.

    Look at my bike!

It started out as a 6 speed so I just stripped it down etc, stuck a sprocket on it. Its currently a suicide hub so rather than die riding it or get a new wheel i thought id just weld the sprocket on there, i have no other use for the wheel/sprocket/bike so it doesn't matter if it goes wrong.

Second, I need some front tracknuts. I've been looking everywhere and no one has them, my LBS didn't even go and look, they just glanced at the axle and told me to fuck off. This may be due to them being cocks. No one could even tell me what kind of nut I need. I have some M8 nuts and they seem to be the right size but the thread is wrong, needs to be a higher pitch I think.

So does anyone have some spare nuts I could buy? The hub says 'mallard' on it and its off a Raleigh Europa. Here is a picture of the axle...

  • Pfft, whaddya need nuts on the front axle for? pussy!

  • wheelies are for douche bags, htfu! ;-)

  • think you need a new LBS. Anyone should be able to get you a coupla nuts..

  • Tell me about it, my LBS is turd etc..

I would and could ride it with no nuts but the dropout bits are dodgy so the wheel moves around loads, pretty difficult to steer. Gonna go to a bike recycling place tomorrow and see if they have any as they refurbish old bikes.

  • am i right in thinking that there is no lock-ring on your sprocket? what happens when u slow down with out using your brake?danger?

  • the sky goes black

  • i'll give you some nuts if you promise not to weld that hub, and go out and buy a proper track hub now.

  • I feckin told you i was gonna weld the hub! Cheaper than a new hub/wheel eh.

Do you actually have some nuts?

  • you just need regular 15mill wheel nut (10 mill inside as it's a 10 mill axle), any bike shop'll have one (correct me if i'm wrong)

  • Weld the cog.... nice.
Fuck the nuts and weld the hub to your fork while your at it.

  • You need to go to another bike shop.

  • fred, you were wrong im afraid. i think.

anyway, i got the nuts, think they were 7mm or something. just need to weld the sprocket now and its done.

  • erm that hub looks like aluminium. i could be wrong mind.

  • youre probably right, i know a guy who can weld but he hasnt had a look at it yet, i dont really understand what can be welded and what cant be. i take it aluminium cant be?

  • the magnet sticks, its not alu

  • sure the magnet is not sticking to the steel axle and steel spokes not the hub? aluminium can be welded but not to a ferrous material like steel

  • maybe, ill have a better test later.

if i cant weld it is there any other way of keeping it on there? other than loctite?

  • yep buy a new hub. :)

  • nahh, i still reckon its steel anyway
