Smallest freewheel cogs?

  • I've been looking in the SEARCH, for small and freewheel cogs, I don't see much smaller than 16t. Though BMX cogs can be 13t. Can BMX cogs fit proper sized track or flip-flop hubs? Your help is much appreciated.

  • got a specialized bmx flip-flop hub, free/free, if you want? i've seen 9t, not sure what they fit on tho.

  • Cheers matt (baddesigner) , but what I don't know is, why the do "normal" cogs only go down to artound 16t, yet much smaller are available for BMX? Would a near 100 gear of 48x12 be a lighter rig than say 50x14, for example? Also, do all bmx cogs just fit any track hubs? Thanks for answering.

  • I want to upgrade my hubs and change the cogs, on a flip flip, to maybe 48x15 and a 48x13. Its about mash-to-crash, NOT spin-to-win.

  • bmx freewheels that fit on regular flip flop hubs go down to 13 tooth (the odyssey ones are the best), take your wheel to a decent shop and they should let you try to thread it on before you buy, the freewheels come in an unsealed cardbord box so i cant see why they should have a problem with that. Bmx cassette hubs can go down to an 8 tooth and i guess you might be able to thread one onto a 28" (36 or 48 hole) rim but i dunno if that would work. Try the odyssey 13th freewheel, they're solid and last long as hell

  • I think you'll find that freewheels smaller than 15t fit on BMX flipflop hubs. The threaded side for smaller freewheels is thinner in diameter than a normal hub. This allows for a smaller internal diameter of the freewheel, hence a lower tooth count.

They will not fit on a regular track hub.

  • Just what I was going to say but was looking for a link to back myself up. I now have object o the link is no longer needed.

  • yeah the diameter is smaller once you go under 15th

  • Three of us in agreement. Bow to our knowledge.

  • Veggie-burgers one. Ass-for-slippers zero. Cheers Object. Bad news, but at least I'm well guided.

  • Next, but obvious question; can over-sized bmx hubs be built into regular 700 wheels?

  • What's the rear spacing on your frame. BMX hubs come in at 110 so you can easily space then out to 120 with a few washers, just a thought.

  • How did I know you were going to ask?

  • Veggie genius

  • Just get a bigger chain ring. Do you want fixed on one side? If so then BMX flip flop is a no no. Flip flop in BMX just allows you to run LHD not fixed free.

  • Not sure of the spacing. Will check later.

  • To be fair BMX freehubs are also pretty outdated as pretty much all hubs made in the last three years have used internal drivers (Which go down to eight teeth) can't recommend anytthing less than 10 though as the pressure exerted on the teeth is phenomenal. Bear in mind that at most you only ever have half the teeth in contact with the chain, so what would usually be spread over say 8 teeth is reduced to 4. That's a shit load of newtons right there.

  • If it's 135 spaced there's always the option of a mountain bike SS hub too.

  • I'm going home now. It's about time I stopped filling your mind with knowledgerubbish.

  • Good call. To be honest Object, I thought MTB hubs and road hubs were nearly the same.

  • Not enough B12 my friend. I did warn you. :))

Looks like I will have to go for the bigger chainring after all, even though I was hoping to avoid it.

Now, where can I get a 15t freewheel for starters? I can only find down to 16t.

  • AC racing 15 tooth freewheel for standard hub thread; the limiting size is usually the pawls so they shifted them outboard to get the smaller cog on.

    Bullshit.

  • Veggie anger. I can picture the flailing wrists..
