All of the above. Plus every now and again some scallies nick one of the hydraulic cutters from a fire station that the brigade uses to cut people free of burning vehicles and such like. There's not much they won't cut through.

At least, that's what I heard was behind a spate of bike and scooter theft around the Islington/Dalston area a couple years back.

If you're interested I've created a Flickr pool for Bicycle Theft in London.

It's a bit of a grand plan but It's been created to try and capture which/where the bikes were stolen (using the mapping/geotagging feature within flickr). The idea being that as the list grows then we can see hotspots and try and keep an eye out.

Latest on The Prince George E8 is that the other night three guys on motorbikes pulled up with a pair of hydraulic bolt croppers chopped out some bikes, threw them over their shoulders and sped off.

fuck stabby-stabby. a gentle word in his shell-like, done properly will do the trick. I've had knives pulled on me and there are ways to deal with it. key thing is to ensure no-one loses face.

A good Idea would be to start another thread entitled: "Suspicious GumBay Sales" where dodgy offerings could be monitored and recorded (screengrabs etc) for future record, as Gumtree ads can be edited.

oh seriously matey.....my friend got her saddle,stem and bars nicked and next week all her shit appears on gumtree together with other "track shit"....we ring him up and he shows up with her stuff.......after asking where is that from he says ohh i bought it of my mate....guy comes into shop after his bars/stem is nicked and after week it appears on the same gumtree post.....and i remember him and his mateys form brick lane markets years back....so....

Not so long ago everyone in my office sat and watched as a white transit pulled up to where there's always a lots of bikes chained up as well as a motorcycle parking bay/rank. Two guys get out the back with some powered bolt cutters as per fire service. Start throwing bikes in the back followed by a couple of very expensive motorbikes.

With a huge grin and upraised finger they then disappeared. The next day the police sent someone round to get statements. Given this was in EC2 with endless cameras, armed bobbies stood on Moorgate etc I guess it's indicative of where bike/motorcycle theft sits in their priorities.

My bike now sits behind my desk when I'm at work...
