She's clever. When she realises this whole single speed malarkey is quite silly and wants gears back again, she's not hacked apart a nice road bike.

Not necessarily. You could get a band on shifter.

When I had a single speed roadie conversion I had bosses on the frame. I was always planning to get some old shifters and chop them down (so no lever, but the circular bit covering the boss was still there). Completely useless but maybe better looking than the bosses.

On a single speed it can still act as a chain tensioner, just gotta take it off when she turns fixed.
