People with full custom frames

How much do these kind of things usually cost, just spoke to a nice frame builder about getting a full custom, curved tube (top and seat) fillet brazed columbus slx, spirt or life track frame build just for me. Just wondering how much others have paid, seems quite a bit, he says somewhere between 600-750, depending.

depends on the tubing...Bob Jackson customs start at 450 but can readily go up with better tubing, chromed lugs etc. Not sure where slx fits in terms of goodness/badness but a lot would probably depend on that

I think that the price he quoted is pretty good given the curvy tube element - if it includes paint its even better - the BJ's at 450 arent really full custom, just them moving the settings around on a machine - a hand built custom frame with decent tubing can easily cost upwards of 1000 quid.

I'd say that if you were getting something in the 753 range for that price, but then the last frame I had built was 4 years ago...

Cool, think its near top end Columbus, stuff. That's fully painted, ready to go, he said he will fit the headset for me too so I just need to throw bits on an ride. Yeah that's full custom i.e go there, have some measurements taken and have a chat about how I want it to be etc.

for a good quality track frame that doesn't sound too bad, i guess depending on what velodrome you ride at you get to spec the bb height too, no point in having a really high bb if you only ride herne hill not calshot or manchester.

Probably both and again probably both. I mentioned to him I will be some track some street maybe 50/50. Also mostly hh, but some dude at work goes down to calshot a couple of times a month, so I also mentioned that. Think its all very much what will work.

slx tubing is the old stuff, spirit is 725 area and life is 631 kind of equivalent

And also fillet adds a lot to the price, apparently takes loads longer than lugging.

Have you tried Steve Goff in Skelmersdale near Liverpool? He has a good reputation and does not cost the earth....he has remnants of 531SL...yes Special Lightweight and 753...find him on the web.....He got a positive mention a couple of months ago in Cycling Plus's frame builder article.

And of course 531 Competition!...as well as the more modern tubes.

I agree, but it was said earlier that Bob Jackson's aren't true custom, as they are made on a machine. I think this was inferring that they're tig welded by a droid or something, when it's really a gnarly little dwarf with jig and roll up.

Some frame builders don't use a jig, albeit not many.

And not all hand-made frames are built in jigs, from Ron Cooper's site:

Don't bother with a custom frame, just sand your legs or arms down a few inches and get a nice Nagasawa frame off njs-keirin.blogspot.com and Bobitu san's your uncle!

Im now waiting for it to arrive. It got sent on the 29th. Its black with matt black decals (It should be anyway!)
