• A few tips for those doing their first long(ish) ride:

    1. Check your bike, make sure it is in good working order. Go over the tyres, make sure they are not worn down and (especially if you are from South London) there is no glass, rocks, nails or knives sticking out of them. If you have new tyres, now is the time to put them on.

    2. Pump up your tyres to max pressure! This helps reduce punctures.

    3. Pack a spare inner tube and some basic tools. If you are travelling light, just the tube. Other people should have some tools.

    4. Have a big breakfast Sat morning and optional ** take it easy Fri night**. You are going to need the energy. Even the most experienced riders (Seb) really struggled when they went out the night before, got very little sleep and didn't eat anything before the ride.

    5. Bring some water and some snacks. It's a long ride, it may be a hot day and you will need to re-hydrate. Energy bars, museli bars, bananas, nuts and chocolate are good snacks to keep the energy levels up and stave off the bonk. We will probably be stopping at a shop along the way where you can buy some food and drink, but it may be a few hours into the ride.

    6. Take down someone's phone number. Before the ride, swap numbers with someone from your group. Just in case.

    7. Talk to people you haven't met before. Enjoy the scenery. Experience the joy of riding without the fear of some cab driver trying to run over your head. Race other people on the flat stretches (or the downhills. Or the uphills). Have fun!

    8. Drink heavily after the ride.

    Any other tips?
