  • A few tips for those doing their first long(ish) ride:

    1. Check your bike, make sure it is in good working order. Go over the tyres, make sure they are not worn down and (especially if you are from South London) there is no glass, rocks, nails or knives sticking out of them. If you have new tyres, now is the time to put them on.

    2. Pump up your tyres to max pressure! This helps reduce punctures.

    3. Pack a spare inner tube and some basic tools. If you are travelling light, just the tube. Other people should have some tools.

    4. Have a big breakfast Sat morning and optional ** take it easy Fri night**. You are going to need the energy. Even the most experienced riders (Seb) really struggled when they went out the night before, got very little sleep and didn't eat anything before the ride.

    5. Bring some water and some snacks. It's a long ride, it may be a hot day and you will need to re-hydrate. Energy bars, museli bars, bananas, nuts and chocolate are good snacks to keep the energy levels up and stave off the bonk. We will probably be stopping at a shop along the way where you can buy some food and drink, but it may be a few hours into the ride.

    6. Take down someone's phone number. Before the ride, swap numbers with someone from your group. Just in case.

    7. Talk to people you haven't met before. Enjoy the scenery. Experience the joy of riding without the fear of some cab driver trying to run over your head. Race other people on the flat stretches (or the downhills. Or the uphills). Have fun!

    8. Drink heavily after the ride.

    Any other tips?

    Nice one Lebowski!

  • Goetze - worst username ever. Nice one!

I know someone called something like this, never seen it written down to know how its spelled.

How is it the worst username ever? What about AFDS?! Or Skullhead for that matter.

  • Object and I are going on the train.
I think its a good idea for us to pack the BBQs as we won't be riding too far. If anyone wants to come on the train with us let me konw. PM me before 2
We are taking an earlier train than 11.45!

good idea Jacqui! nice meeting you wed!

  • Where y'all meeting when you get there, by chance me and the lady are poodling down there tomorrow, won't join you guys for the ride though as Vic will be too slow I think, I'm going fixed but just wondering if I should switch out for a SS freewheel so as I don't go insane at 7 miles an hour... would be nice to meet up though at the other end

  • Nice one Lebowski!
One should also consider an appropriate layer of apparel between saddle and skin. The layer next to the skin matters most. You could always slap a pair of combats, jeans, whatever over cycling lycra. It could make all the difference.

  • heyo so my brakes need tightening. does anyone in the "medium" group have the necessary skills/ tools to help me out? thanks!

    see yall tomorrow morning.

    :D

we'll probably be on the beaches west of the centre of town - down where there's more space and nice lawns. not too far away from the pride madness, tho!

my number's in the private thread, as are lots of people's - why don't you take a couple down and bell us when you arrive?

  • i can do your brakes up today if you want.

will come tomorrow if the sun is out. i don't fancy a wet ride to a wet pride to a wet beach.

  • stil not sure what tyres to use - any suggestions?
or should I just stick with my 5 week old stelvios (which have the raceguard thingamy)?

also I vote my name as pretty shit, may have to contact an image consultant and rebrand myself.

  • Aww fuck is it gonna be wet?

Ha, yeah make you get those sorted. Last time I was on full lock with my front brake and still going down Turners Hill too fast for comfort. Certainly got the blood pumping!

  • Aww fuck is it gonna be wet?

Nah, a few light showers at worst. Ubiquitious HTFU comment.

    Oh and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goatse.cx

Not sure if the site is still up, but enter at your peril!

  • just putting in an update to the list as i see it - as Claus says - i don't think any group will catch any other based on just speed alone - it will come down to stops, punctures, prayers, etc.
