I did my first ride ever with headphones last week. I didn't use my decent in-ear phones cos they block out ambient noise too much, just the shitty bog standard ipod ones. I switched it off till I got beyond the M25 (it was a 100 mile loop) cos I couldn't hear the music over the traffic. It wasn't loud, and it did help to stave off the boredom/voices in my head during those difficult patches you get when you spend more than 3 hours in the saddle. I was aware of traffic approaching from behind at all times.
