I think it's more than aesthetics. There's an identity associated with non machined deep section rims. deep section unmachined = no brake = fixed gear
though sometimes the equation goes wrong:
deep section unmachined + more than 5 points on hipster bingo = no brake + member of the beloved "fixie scene"
