  • That's the safest bet in the world. Make it a bit edgy, give him a chance.
    65 or 70mins then!?

  • you sure that's the exact course, sam?

I looked at the CC's website, got the course name (H25/8) and whacked it into Bikely.

  • i bet u £10 u can't do it under an hour!

of course i can't! i'm not looking to win, just thought it might be fun to take part.

  • sounds pretty straight forward

  • Give it ago. From what I heard people said you were quick on the track day.

  • indeed he was

  • where's murts? make it interesting..

  • Yes,course is H25/8. It is reasonably suitable for fixed - not flat but no hard climbs. I have ridden it on 90" (50 x 15) and gone as fast or faster than I would have done on gears, and I'm not young or strong. There will be no gear restriction. It's hard to guess what time would be needed to win fixed prize because not many rides have been done on fixed in the recent past, although it is beginning to become more popular.
I'm about to go away for two weeks, but when I get back I will post more information, including details of how to enter.

  • 56:02 appears to be the record (quick google, probably wrong) which means 99% of this forum would go over the hour for the course, geared or not.

  • So is this an A road, with traffic lights then. Whats the traffic flow like. Things like this will surely have a massive impact on time. If its fairly flat, I reckon I would have a bash at it on about 85" Constant 26mph. Would be quite a challenge as it would mean spinning at 100 revs for an hour

  • There won't be lights (well, I hope not!) but there might be roundabouts.. you can lose time waiting for cars. But they are usually run early Sunday so the traffic is very light.

  • likely to be a roundabout at the turn point. it'll have been chosen because there are no lights on it. the wind direction/strength will have quite an impact also.

  • +1 for the wind. It looks like it's up and down pretty much the same stretch of road 4 times.

  • Sounds like fun! This site is interesting if you want to read about fixed TT madness http://www.fixedwheel.co.uk/fixedwheel%20records.htm

    A couple of select snippets:

The medium gear (less than 72") 25 mile record is 53.23, which equates to an average cadence of 132 rpm! Which is fucking crazy.

On a wet Saturday evening in 1993, Chris Boardman shattered his own 25 mile competition record on 110" fixed. Riding on a revised version of the H25/13 course based on the A34 at Oxford, his plan was simple. Turn the110" gear at 102 rpm and he would do a 47. Chris being on top form during his build up to the hour record attempt looked rock steady and keeping his heart rate at around 180 bpm made the ride look effortless. Choosing a bike with fixed rather than gears resulted in a 30% reduction in weight, Chris was able to stay well on top of the gear and record a 45-57. After the ride Chris said he thought he would be unable to father anymore children after bouncing all over the saddle on the 2 mile downhill start. Personally I would tell Chris to stop moaning and try riding the medium gear.

  • CB - what a legend. It's been on already, but Chris Boardman:The Final Hour is on ITV4 Saturday night at 7:55pm as part of the HTFU Extreme Reality series. Great program. Don't miss!

  • The course record for the H25/8 is quicker than that. Ben Instone rode a 50-42 in 2007. I thought that had been broken too. I've ridden a 57something on that course before. No timetrial courses have traffic lights. The courses become defunct, hence the rapid loss of courses of the last few years. The H25/8 is gently rolling mixed dual/single carriageway. The road surface is generally v.good and traffic is light.

Cheers, didn't know that was on.

If the course isn't hilly, the bike weight doesn't really matter - that's one of the reasons they ride heavy disc wheels on many track events.
