I went to the 'meeting' on Sat morning.
Apparently the 5mph was made up at some point, but is really a huge 8 mph. Everyone (council, police, common wardens etc) wanted to keep everyone happy, allow cycling to continue including across the 'illegal' bit, but want cyclists to slow down a bit and be respectful of other users of the common. Seemed fair enough.
They are planning to put up 'shared use' warning signs, rather than segregate peds & cyclists, which is also good to see.

...oh - and a note on how crap the council are:
they allocated funds to resurface all the bike paths across the common last year. Then 2 people went on holiday consecutively & by the time they came back the money had been used for something else.
twats.

Thanks for the update Villa-ru.
What about all the boot camp trainings on the Common? Once about 20 of them came charging across the cycle path as I was going along. Very funny!

Sprint towards them screaming "show me your war face" is the only appropriate response.
He was not fining or anything, just telling people that they should slow down, he was kind of cute hiding behind a branch. Last week we were told that the limit on the Common was 5mph. Villa-ru mentioned that a ped got knocked down by a cyclist hence the police presence.
I just hope that people will keep it slow, I would be really gutted it if the Common was to become a no-zone for cyclists.
