    there's always a problem when a subculture starts going mainstream, and people join for different reasons to the originators, who were often mavericks or contrarians (see surfing). those joining can often be the opposite, and so adopt certain conventions of the originators and fetishise them, sometimes in an odd attempt to prove authenticity.

    of course not everyone needs to feel part of this scene, more often people just like doing stuff that others are into, and any excuse to get into bike riding (rather than other more lame pursuits) seems great to me. bike riding is a broad church, whatever others may think.

    I do like the narcissism and petty hatreds of small differences though - when I was a MTB racer I hated road riders, now I'm a road and track rider with Dulwich Paragon I hate London Dynamo ...
